I posted this on the "other" board and got 1 response.
I'm considering a quick re-wire of my LP's volume pots to allow for independent control of each pup in the center position. I'ts easy enough to do, but are the results worth it in terms of increased tone options?
The one response was a no....stating in fact a loss of tone and clarity. Anyone here done this mod...and how were the results?

Yea I think Chet did this one. I think. You are correct, I have done this one. I noticed no difference other than I can turn up the volume of one pup over the other in the middle position.

I didn't notice a down side. Do you have a diagram for this mod you could post?

Do you have a diagram for this mod you could post? No, I don't but it is really simple. On your volume control pots there are 3 lugs. One lug is the ground. The middle lug should be a wire coming in from the toggle switch. and the other lug is a wire that goes to the tone pot. On both Volume control pots switch the middle wire and the wire going to the tone control pot. So that you would have: One lug ground, middle lug to the tone control pot, and the other end lug would be the wire in from the the toggle switch.

Thanks Guys. I was thinking that being able to adjust them independently would allow for some subtle flavoring of the overall tone, do you find this to be true Chet?

Yes, being able to turn up one pup volume over the other will change the tone slightly. Whether you like it or not is up to your taste.

Shouldn't there be a stronger signal when you have both active this way. If you for instance have neck volume at 4 and bridge volume at 9 with the normal soldering, the lower of the two should bring them both down a bit. But if it is soldered the other way there should be no difference, right?

Yeah, coming from the factory, you're output would be the 4 in that scenario. RE-wiring wouldn't really strengthen the signal but in theory it would allow you to have more control over how you blend your overall tone. You could set your bridge tone to 8, your neck to 6 and with independent volume you could adjust each pups output to further tweak your tone.

In that case, I think I will do a little soldering then. If youre doing it, please let me know how it turns out.

RE-wired my lp last night. I didn't experiment with it much beyond making sure everything still worked...been on a fingerpicking jones lately so the Ovation recieved most of my attention last night.
I'll be able to elaborate more on the results after I play it for a bit tonight.
