I have a galaxie 10 watter w/ 1- 12ax7, and 1- 6l6gc. I want to get an "edgier" (for a better word) overdrive tone w/o using a pedal, Can I substitute another preamp tube, I know theres not alot I can do w/ it, but I want to try ..... thanks in advance.

Groove Tubes 12AX7's are rated 1- 10 according to how much additional gain they have. But there is just so much a tube can do, you may still end up with a pedal.

well, how "edgy" do you want to go? you can find a slightly higher gain preamp tube and try to substitute that.. however, the gain of the preamp stage has just as much to do with the actual construction of the stage as it does with the tube thats used. if you really need some additional gain and youre not opposed to going a bit "extreme" with things, you can try to find a trusted amphead (like me ) who lives in your area. tell him/her what you want to do with the amp and you may be able to have them switch cathode resistors/capacitors to achieve the response you want. -Joe

a ten watter tube amp wouldn't be too hard to crank. Some nice power tube saturation is what most people want.
