I bought a used TSL 100 not so long ago. My previous amp was a MG100hdfx, which had some "edgy" and unarticulate character which was impossible to get off no matter what. So I wanted some tube sound. And I am currently using my MG cab to the TSL head. I think that the cab is the weakest part of the MG series. And I still have kind of edgy sound with my TSL to. I know that loudspeakers make a big difference, and I am gonna get a 1960AV(vintage 30's) as soon as I can. But until then I wanted a good sound, so I bought new JJ tubes, adjusted the bias to 85mV's and only used one pair of them (50 watts is still LOUD). That improved the sound, but still has a bit of that nasty "character". I know that a tube amp sounds best with less gain and more volume, and that is the sound I want, but with this cab it starts to "rumble"(can you say that?) in high volume. I played a TSL 100 once before and had a much smoother and more articulate sound. So my final question is: How big difference does a high quality cab have compared to a crap quality cab? I should also mention that the MG cab handles 120 watts, and the 1960AV handles 280 watts.

a better cab helps big time ,,, i've been told to make a marshall cab sound better make a replacement rear panel out of thicker material ,,, i have recently got a peavey 412 ms cab real thick wood ,( 1 inch ? ) and its front loading , the back is sealed , metal grate on front ,, i think it sounds better than my 1960 marshall

I am assuming that is has 12AX7's for Pre-Amp Tubes? Try putting a 5751 in V1. I do that with my Marshall JTM45 RI. Also, It sounds to me like 85mV's might be too high. If I remember correctly about 35 to 40 is the range you want.

I have had the 1960AV cab for some time now. And it sounds great now, you can really hear that it is broken in. About the bias and tubes, I put the two back in again and adjusted the bias to 80mV's. The 50 watt version has 45mV's as recommended bias setting, and the TSL has 90mV's. But I find it much better sounding with 80mV's, it's smoother and more "chunky". Yes, it uses 12AX7's, it sounds great with the JJ's, but I might put in some lower gain tube in V1 some day. This setup is not even close to how it was when I had the MG cab. This setup sounds awesome. But as with all tube amps, it sounds best cranked. And that's LOUD.
