Oha! It came to my mind that this little Crate 15 Watts amp I had back in the day had an open enclosure. The back of the Marshall MG15 I purchased recently was totally closed. I wondered why? Any ideas? So I took a screwdriver and detached the back panel. Believe it or not, the amp sounds really different now. Smoother and warmer. I like it alot! It was quite nasal before, now it sounds very full and sonorous. Those of you who have this amp may try it out, you won´t ruin a thing, if you don´t like it you can reassemble the back board easily with it´s 4 screws. Simply check it out.

Thanks Steel....I think I'll give it a try. Any concerns about a shock hazard?

No danger of a shock hazzard, the amplifier´s chassis is totally closed. Only the speaker cable comes out of it to connect to the speaker. I am thinking of applying a hook and loop fastener to have this little amp real versatile. One could apply and detach the back panel then within a jiffy.

If you look the panel is probably made of particle board, replace it with a solid piece of plywood and the tone will change again.

Hmm, I guess you are right, a back of solid wood should change the sound again, maybe even a back with a small hole, instead of a fully closed back. Hmmm, there are really some nice options. Maybe if I have the time I will give it a try.

If you copy the style of 3 piece backs on some of the cabs you can change your tone with just a couple of screws.

I took the back off my Marshall 4x12 cab a little while ago and it sounded sooo much nicer, everything sounded much clearer.
I know that the Gibson goldtone cab has 2 10s and 2 12s and the 10s are open back, I'd really like to hear how that sounds
