Is there any difference between the Epi '56 LP goldtop and the LP standard besides the color? That is, do they have the same neck, pots, pickups, etc? Thanks.

The Epi '56 GoldTop comes with P-90 pickups which are different for sure (and great), but the rest of you experts will have to chime in concerning body specs (I get confused...).

Acording to the offical Epi site, The bodys for both are either made of full mahogany or full Alder... The tops however are different, the Standard is maple and the Gold Top has a mahogany/ alder top depending.... Each factory uses what ever woods are avalible at the time.... Hence mahogany/ alder.....As for wieght, mahogany is heavier wood...

these new china made Les Paul bodies appear to have been drilled with weight relief holes, so the weight vs wood issue is alot tougher to guage properly.

If you are looking for a goldtop and a great deal that beats Epiphone, checkout Rondomusic.com and look at the Agile 2500 and 3000 versions of the goldtop. You won't regret it. -James

I wonder what the real reason behind that one is.... It can't be cost cutting, it would cost more to do it.... Very interesting.... Thanks Smooth....

the mahogany is DEFINATLEY a heavier wood then maple. I dont just mean guitars, it just is a heavier wood. Now I find my goldtop weighs and sounds alot bassier than other les pauls because of the mahogany.
The p90s are amazing! Just go buy one and you'll see what I mean.

I have to add that there are a lot of different kinds of mahogany, not all of them are heavy, some are pretty light as well... for example Limba, also Korina is not that heavy weighted... Don´t want to argue around, but when someone talks about mahogany one should always have in mind what kind of mahogany is meant... Same goes for other kinds of wood also, swamp ash for example is by far heavier than "ordinary" ash...

I hear you Steel, there are different types of Mahogany....However on the Epi site, they don't really say what type is being used for there LP's ....Your guess is as good as mine, on that one.....
