Seems Musician's Friend has some of the SG Classics with P90s in stock again, but only in the cherry (not ebony) this time. Not the deal it was a couple years ago, but a great "real Gibson" guitar nonetheless for the price. Keep watching as they run low on stock to see if they lower the price....

sounds like the pete towndsend sg. im sure its not that one, but he did have a signature one as far as i can remember. i like the p 90 sound, especially on an sg. on my rp 200 effects pedal its got an pup effect. you can make a double coil a single or a single a double. i have 3 different settings w/ a single coil setting. since im an avid sg believer and fan, i love that axe, some day i might just get me an sg w/ p 90s.

It's not his signature model but supposedly similar to the one he used on the "Live at Leeds" LP. The tonal variations are almost endless and it's built like a tank. All I don't like are the jumbo frets.

I've never really found them useful anyways (jumbo frets). I can't get the action as low as I want, they inhibit sliding up the fretboard, and frankly I play faster without 'em. I'll have to see if Guitar Center is going to get the P90 SGs in soon, I'd like to give it a shot. Ty

How can I tell if I have jumbo frets on mine, or what else they might be?

How can I tell if I have jumbo frets on mine, or what else they might be? The inlaid metal wire strips are what we're talking about; typical jumbo frets are thicker and/or wider and/or crown higher than the standard/classic ones. Fender also offers medium-jumbo frets sized halfway between the two. They're supposed to aid in string/pitch bending and vibrato. All my various Epiphone models seem to have classic sized ones, but my Gibson SG Classic (ironically) has frets that are so wide and high that it's obvious they're different. The Stewart MacDonald catalog defines their Medium fretwire as 0.080" to 0.095" width, and Wide as 0.100" and above. Can anyone else help jeje out better than I'm doing?
