Finally, I can start one of the 'new guitar' threads, too Got myself an antique burst(?) Telecaster, it's a Squier.. Agathis(never heard of) body, maple neck, and a Rosewood fingerboard, according to squierguitars.com As far as my limited abilities can tell, it plays nicely, straight from the shop Nice deal, 350 euros (and thats cheap up here).. for it, including a setup, a gigbag, new strings, and a strap..

Sorry, I was going to comment earlier but was sidetracked. Congrats on the new acquisition, I've always been a big Tele fan (the neck pickup is awesome), and the Squier is a pretty great deal for the amount you spend and the amount you get. Give us a full overview, I'd like to know how the pickups sound, how is the neck? Ty

Congrats! Agathis is a tropical wood, sometimes considered to be inferior by ignorant people. Agathis is often used in lower priced series in the Ibanez program. Agathis is light colored and a bit reddish, it has not a strong grain (so it is hardly or never used for see thru finishes) and can have nice tone qualities. What I read is the following: Agathis has not a specific character tonewise. So you never know what you really get, it´s a little bit of a surprise. There are many kinds of Agathis and all are a bit different. Agathis is affordable, but by no means cheap or inferior.

Well, actually I was a little sceptic the first evening, even though I tested it in the store.. it kept going out of tune and sounded a little sour, but after I set it up and fixed the intonation and put on new strings, it was cool I put some .009's on it, and its a real smooth player The sound is harsh Tele'ish on the neck(or is it bridge?), and surprisingly mellow on the other.. Its a world apart from my LP, which is a good thing I don't have any complains, except that the neck is so smooth, my LP is like sliding on dry rubber compared to it I'm struggling with an ancient digital camera, trying to get some pics.. webcam and cellphonecameras look sh*t..

She's a beaut too! I think Squiers (apart from a few minor problems, such as noise and poor factory action) are actually great builder guitars. Granted this is based on my squier strat which, if all goes well, will have only the body, bridge and tuners as original equipment... and the bridge and tuners might be the next to go. If anything it's a good foundation from which any sort of madness can be had. Enjoy, Ty

The pickups are a little noisy, so I'll probably find new ones.. If anyone has recommendations on good Tele pickups at an affordable price, I would be happy

Surprisingly, stock Yamaha tele neck pickups are really sweet sounding, I was lucky enough to pick one up for about 15 bucks on ebay and am thrilled with the sound. It's a bar magnet, but it has a shielding wire and is wax potted. Otherwise, check out www.billlawrence.com (that's three L's in there) or www.kentarmstrong.com, both have pickups with great tone and great prices. The Lawrence pickups are a bit cheaper, but they're probably the best strat pickups I've ever played (they are now installed stock in Fender American and American Delux strats), so I assume the Tele stuff is just as good. Oh yeah, also I'd reccommend that you switch out the old strat wiring, it's pretty low quality and I'm sure you're picking up a bit of noise in that department. Some nice shielded wire can be had for free if you look sweetly at your local guitar tech and talk shop a bit. The pots and switch should be sufficient, though if you get bored a swap is always a good (and cheap) lazy day project. Ty
