Hey, I'm back after a bit of a hiatus, and with two new bands (one soft, one metally). I've been using my LP to great effect for my metal band since it's got the great tone, sustain, and perfect neck for my solos, but I've been needing a backup since our shows are traditionally pretty rowdy and I don't want to find myself up a certain creek with a broken string and half a set left (my strat is too light sounding for what I"m shooting for). I've been thinking about going against my normally conservative taste and splurging on something totally 80's shred, possibly a Rhoads V or Explorer body (maybe even an Epi V). Any suggestions? If I got the Rhoads or an Epi I'd probably pair a Kent Armstrong Mega Distortion with one of his PAFs (though I think that might be a weird blend with the three way in the center position). Thanks, and cheers Ty

Hi, welcome back on the forum! Funny you mention a totally 80´s shred guitar... look what I found, it´s in my last post here in this rubrique. ;D For heavy music I´d suggest in any case a metal looking guitar. Of course you can play metal on a Les Paul and a Stratocaster, but a bit of a metal look is also quite nice. Are you looking for a brandnew guitar or would you prefer buying second hand? A Rhoads-style guitar, a Flying V or an Explorer are in any case good options to choose from. What about a Gothic V or Explorer? The pickups on those newer guitar series are really very metal. You won´t need aftermarket pickups... the stock ones are really decent.
