Back in the late 60's/early 70's Dan Armstrong had a series of acrylic guitars and basses (most famous user-Keith Richard of that upstart Rolling Stones group). Some had component pick ups that could be exchanged or their position moved on a rail. They were slightly thinner than a then(Kalamazoo)-Epiphone Crestwood (which I had at the time) and weighed slightly more. There were even copies of them made and sold under the Ampeg and Ibanez name plates. They're still around and go for about $1-1.5K on E Bay.

Oh yea I remember those. The guitarist for the Georgia Satelites played one. Not sure who made it. I picked up one in a music store back in the middle ages (80s). It was kind of cool but not my thing. Sounded ok and played nice.
