Ok, so my dad was watching a G3 DVD, and Steve Vai is playing For the Love of God.. (Not a particular fan of Vai and Satriani and the gang myself).. Anyway, playing the same song on my LP, I wasn't getting near the sustain Vai has on his Ibanez :/ Is it effects, my playing, or just his (or my) guitar? Yes, I realize I have a $500 axe, and his is probably ten times that price, and custom built, but still

I've watched the preview videos for the three of them that you can get to through Joe Satriani's site. (The Vai video features him with a triple neck guitar ). Anyway, I don't know how he gets his sustain, maybe from a compressor/sustainer effect. I don't thinks it's just that the Ibanez Jem has better sustain.

I believe it is a combination of FX, Guitar, and Technique.

Ok, so it's not just something wrong with my guitar? BTW, speaking of triplenecks, check out John Paul Jones with this monster: home.ispnordic.no/speiseh/jpj/

Don't forget the amp in the puzzel, it might be close and loud enough to give him the sustain he gets.

I don't think the string wrap does too much for sustain. It does makes bends a heck of a lot easier though!

Well, I haven't tried it on my LP. I did the string wrap on a Jay Turser LP clone and like I said, it helped with bends quite a bit but didn't get any sustain benefit.
I also did it on my Ibanez Artist but that already had tons of sustain to start with so I didn't notice it there either. Again it helped with the string bends but I ended up switching back 'cause the strings felt like rubber bands! The Artist is easy to do string bends on anyway with the stock setup. Like they say... If it ain't broken, don't fix it!
I wouldn't mind trying it with my Epi LP but if I do and don't like it, I really hate the little scratches you get on the tailpiece. Maybe I'll try it after I get one of those light weight replacement tailpieces.

I've tried tailwrapping before, and I didn't really notice any big jumps in sustain..

What strings did you have on them? I use 12's....

I started playing about half a year ago and although my fingertips have hardened, I'm still working on my left hand strength. So I'm using 10s right now and have setup both of my guitars for them. I'm thinking maybe going to 11s but feel very comfortable with the 10s as they seem to be a good halfway point. Anything thinner feels too soft.

A lot of string tension is good for tone, but it makes the bends harder to do. I like to stick with 10s
