What is a coil tap(like Jimmy Page had in his #1), and what does it do exactly?
edit: and what are 'push-pull' pots?

What is a coil tap(like Jimmy Page had in his #1), and what does it do exactly? edit: and what are 'push-pull' pots? OK, let me see if I can explain this so it is understood. Coil Tap, or Coil Splitting is wiring a humbucker pickup so that one of the two coils is cut out of the circuit in essence turning it into a single coil pickup. Pots are the volume/tone controls of a guitar, a push/pull pot is a control pot that has 2 sets of connectors (one set for the up position and one set for down position), and the control knob is pulled up or pushed down. Example: With the control knob in the down position and wired for normal humbucker, you get the full humbucker. Then by simply using a different wiring combination from the pickup pulling up on the control know splits or coil taps the humbucker.

Okay, so coil splitting and push/pull pots are parts of the same 'thing'?

Okay, so coil splitting and push/pull pots are parts of the same 'thing'? Basically most wiring diagrams that coil split use a push/pull pot. It is possible to use an on/on toggle switch, but that usually requires drilling a hole for the switch.

There are several different Jimmy Page wiring diagrams there.

My Fender Custom HH Telecaster has Coiltapping and it's great!
It (in my opinion) adds some tonal range to a traditional humbucking guitar. The differnce in tone, in the case of my Tele, is very pronounced.
