Hi fellows, I have a question... I noticed it is not only me who´s got an assorted bunch of guitars in the mid price range. What came to my mind when I met this guy last week, who played his old Gibby for nearly 30 years, is the following: Does it make sense to have G.A.S. and collect a real bunch of mid priced and priceworthy guitars, to improve them, customize them and love them for their looks and their own differences and characters, buy, sell, trade... or does it make more sense to consider on two really special and carefully chosen guitars and keep them? To cut it short... what does make more sense: to own 7 Epis or having 2 real Gibbys?

It's fun to have a big selection for whatever mood suits me, and I've generally bought them as I wanted rather than hope to modify something. Plus, I also have the "real" ones as well.

its not one of the choices, but I would choose to have about 3 mid priced guitars and 3 high priced guitars.

I have only sold one. I have guitars in all price ranges (low, medium, and over $1000). I enjoy the variety and try to rotate what guitar is being played.

I would say that I certainly fall into the "lots of mid-range" group. Maybe because I fall into "advanced beginner" or "lousy intermediate" type of player, I certainly wouldn't feel "worthy" of owning a high-end guitar not be able to play it well enough.
Having a variety of lesser-priced guitars has a two-fold purpose for me: -It certainly makes playing them alot more fun. I love learning new techniques and trying them out on the different guitars. -I guess that I just like the way they look! Call me crazy, but if they were just objects and not musical instuments, I think that I would still desire them.
I'm sure that if my skill increases significantly, that I will eventually spring for that high-end axe. But for now, I'm pretty happy doing what I'm doing.

Hey guys...it does not matter to me if my guitars are top of the line, bottom of the line or somewhere in the middle. I only want to have a couple of guitars that feel good in my hands and have the sound I desire. Beyond that I would only desire a couple of different guitar models for different sounds, like Tele, Strat and LP, along those lines. I have never thought that any guitar was a guaranteed gem just because of the name on the headstock anyway.

...I believe expensive guitars are meant for professionals to depreciate against they're income for tax purposes...otherwise they're just expensive toys....
...lucky we don't play piano...how many Steinways would we need....
...my music teacher advised me not to sell or trade musical instruments/equipment because you rarely get anything near their true value...there are exceptions to this...but...they're far and few in between....
...following his advice...I have one acoustic...and...upon his recommendation...an electric...because it's easier for a beginner to learn on...he was right....
...master the instrument...then...move on to where you want to go....
