Well, I got a new guitar for an early birthday present and after a solid week of review, wanted to let you all know about this truely incredible value.
I want to start by saying this - I have never cared much for Ibanez guitars. Nothing personnal, but other than an LP lawsuit copy, I have never cared much for them. They do sound great in some hands, just not in mine...until last Saturday. After some arm twisting ;D, the wife convinced me to go to a guitar shop I always go to. I mean, come on guys, we had to take a break from looking at curtains ....lol. Turns out, she had been in there a few days before, met with my buddy who works there, and had picked out a few guitars for me to try. Anyways, I played the first few and had no real interest. (I'm going into what they were). Then, she grabbed a guitar off the wall that I had seen many timnes before, but had never bought. Well, let me tell you this. For the price, for any price really, this guitar was amazing!
And what did I go home with you might ask? An Ibanez SZ320 in the satin finished finished faded brown. Incredible was all I could say. It has a set Mahogany neck -Abalone Dot Inlays- that seems to be more like a neck through. The neck/body joint is not at all like an LP's. Instead, the neck flows into the body making for a very smooth transition. It has a solid Mahogany body with a true Maple cap. (I have yet to open up a pup cavity to check, but from the look of the outer edge, it seems to be a 1/2 to 3/4 inch cap. No veneer here). The bridge is very similar to an LP's, except rounded. No sharp edges at all. And itstead of having the stopbar, the string end are inside the body providing for some killer sustain. Pups are two DiMarzio designed humbuckers with a cool 3 way switch. Up is still the neck, and down is still the bridge. However, with the switch in the center, one coil from each humbucker is tapped to provide a shimmery Strat-esque tone. Very cool. Oh....and the fit and finish is impeccible. Neck and headstock binding. Grover tuners. The finish is a satin finish in which you can see, and feel to a degree, the grain of the maple cap.
All in all, a killer guitar. And at the end of the day, I only paid 525 for the axe AND a hardshell case. For the selling price of $399 online, it can't be beat!! Trust me, find one of these guitars and try it out! I have pushed it hard through 2 six hour rehersals and compared it to my LP's. Very similar in sound to an Epi....except better. And the feel of the Gibson like neck is superb.
