Hey,
Am considering buying a SD invader humbucker for my epiphone 67 V (2nd hand - cheap). Has anyone got any experience with these pickups and how they work with epiphones? Are they suited to metal/rock and will they fit My epi.
Also, which position would I install it in (neck/bridge) and why?
sorry for all the question but I am relatively new to aftermarket pickups.
thanks for any help
james

The Seymour Duncan Invader is a very hot pickup, there are two versions available, on for the neck position (with 7.2 kOhms resistance) and one for the bridge position (with 16.8 kOhms resistance). You can see the bridge type is much more powerful. You always need a stronger output in the bridge position than in neck position, because the wider oscillation of the strings in the neck position provides more output anyway. Okay, that was not your question. I consider the Invader to be too powerful, very alike a DiMarzio X2N, maybe you will be disappointed about the mushy sound it probably produces. It also depends on the amp you use, and if you use a pedal stomp box distortion. A powerful pickup like the Invader is in my opinion designed for the straight use with a tube amp, it can "tickle" a weak preamp somewhat and make it provide more gain. If you use such a pickup and go to a distortion pedal the stomp box will only provide a very harsh unnatural sharpness. When I was younger I was into thinking that a high output pickup is in any case a good pickup, but NOPE. It depends alot on the amp you play through. Meanwhile I found out that "less is more" especially when it comes to distortion or "gain". But that´s just my opinion. Visit Seymour Duncan´s website (www.seymourduncan.com) there you will find detailed descriptions on all the pickups they offer.

thanks for the info.
I do play with a stompbox, ibanez ds7, and am really just looking for a tighter, crunchier palm mute and general sound (with out sounding too nu metalish).
I play metallica, iron maiden ect. and a bita rock too, but mainly metal with my band) how is its clean sound?
If you think this would be a complete waste of my time what do you think I would be better off considering? I am on a budget though....
thanks heaps so far

one word...DON'T!!! Its a muddy, thick, treble-free, bass filled, disgusting sound those produce! Expecially in a mahogany bodied guitar. There is NO question on what pickup you should buy, SEYMOUR DUNCAN DUNCAN DISTORTION! Its an awesome pickup, tight palm muting, smoother high sustain sound, and distorts lliek nothing you've ever heard! it also cleans up very well. If you want a more rock sound, the JB Model is awseome too. As far as Dimarzio goes, the Evolution and breed are great pickups... Hope that helps! Aaron

I totally agree with you, Steele. I have my amps set at maybe 12 o clock for gain, MIDS is whats gonna give you the sustaining drive that most people seek. But i better get back to "work"! Aaron
