i am a true gibson/ epi believer. you cannot imho find a better guitar. ive played a prs or 2 in my day. the are good. but a gibson is excellent. ive owned my fair share of gibsons in my day. i was never disappointed. no use imho of going to something else. i dont care what gibson has done marketing wise. they always deliver.

well doug, it aint really satin, it is worn cherry. its a stain w/ a clear coat. its not glossy, its just the light we were using. its the vintage sg. i love it. ive owned 3 gibsons, a gretsch, a epi sg bully ,a martin acoustic which i still have, it plays like an electric, . and about 15 other guitars ive owned down thru the years. it has to be, believe it or not the best playing guitar ive ever owned, right out of the box. i havent done a thing to it. the pick ups are hot.the neck is unbelievably fast. it is all mahogany w/ a set neck, grover tuners. for about $400 us. ill keep this one till i die. it will go to the grave w/ me. in a word,"fukensweet". sorry about the cussing. check it out on musiciansfriend.com. you will be amazed at this axe's performance. it is as good at lead as it is at rhythym. an all around workhorse.

I recently got a Gibson LP Faded DC in Worn Cherry. I emailed Gibson to see what was the best way to take care of this finish.
It was explained to me that they use the same finish coat (poly I think) but only apply it 1 mil thick instead of the 8 or 9 mil thick on the regular finishes. And to keep it looking faded and not shiny use 0000 Steel Wool lightly going with the grain.
It works, I tried it on mine.

I have to vote : Neither The Ibanez Artist started life out as a Les Paul copy, then Gibby sued, and Ibanez changed to a double cutaway, but with a symetrical cut instedad of the slight offset on the Gibson DC. Those late 70's models are regarded as better (by some) than the Gibsons from the same Era, and can be had for half the price of a comparable DC today.

Ive played a gibson lp standard DC, and several prs DC's, and while i wouldnt touch a cheap PRS, i would take a higher end one like a mc carty or the more expensive santana model over the lp any day. please dont kill me for choosin somethin besides gibson
