As is well known the inferior position of women is rooted in the tribal culture of the times when the religion of Islam originated. Surrounded by harsh climatic conditions, the different tribes were often at war with each other, and under these circumstances the women, who were physically weaker and unfit to participate in battles and long journeys through the inhospitable deserts, had to be kept within the four walls of the household which eventually led to their servitude. Perhaps the women themselves felt comfortable in this arrangement. Islam had just codified their traditional status with religious sanction. With the advent of modernity, women elsewhere gradually demanded better deal and eventually got it in varying degrees. However in the case of Islamic societies, since everything said or endorsed by the Prophet is sacrosanct and cannot be questioned let alone changing any bit of it, the position of women as prevalent in those times has continued till date by and large. Though when viewed from a modern perspective, the situation will seem unjust; from the point of view of the Islamic tradition, it has the sanction of unchangeable laws enshrined in the Holy Qur'an, and hence, mandatory for all Muslims across the entire Islamic world. For those Muslim women who wish to embrace modernity, there is really no choice except to turn apostate with much more disastrous consequences.
