Get the Kat. I have no experience with Samick guitars other that what they look like BUT. I did play an AlleyKat at GC about 2 weeks ago, and just loved it. I played the Heritage Cherry one for $499.00 and did not even think to ask about any other finish, or that it could be 200 dollars cheaper. If I had seen or played one for $299.00 I would be an owner right now. Instead I got a new computer. I could'nt justify 500 on a new guitar but I could have made 300 work. It was the last of the tax return money. Get the Kat bro.

I second the Alleykat. The photo in my avatar is of my arm on my Kat in vintage sunburst. You're gonna love the way it resonates, but I'll tell you now, the first two things to address will be the bridge and the switch. You can either DIY or take it to a shop, but the bridge might have burrs that will break a string in a heartbeat(mine did, anyway), and the switch is an Epi switch and will cut out. Otherwise, you might be paying more for it than $300, but the fixes will only run around $50 bucks, if that. Free if you do it yourself. The biggest advantage it has over the Samick is going to be the pickups, which are quite good. The bridge is bright but not harsh, and the neck is warm and loud. Also, it's not a semi-hollow like an ES-335, with a block going the distance from the neck block to the tail block. Rather, it only has enough wood to mount the stop bar and bridge into. That gives it a woodiness all it's own.

i have an alleykat in trans black, and it's the best looking guitar in my collection. i've played the samicks and i like those too, but i think the headstock, knobs and switches are a little cooler looking on the epi.
as mentioned above, the switch did go bad right away and was replaced under warranty. i also changed the pickups to a duncan '57 bridge and duncan mini hb neck. it was sounding real muffled and dull with the stockers but sounds great now. the neck is pretty wide and i like it.
other than that i'd say just go with personal preference. which one feels better in your hands?
