If Epiphone is the closest you've seen to a gibson, then check out Heritage, Hamer, and Tokai, but especially Heritage.

I like Heritage guitars. Wouldn't even roast marshmellows with a Hamer. As far as Tokai. I looked some up on ebay. They look pretty nice. Damn good thing patent laws can't be inforced over there or there wouldn't be any such thing as a Tokai guitar. And no, I don't know much about Tokai Gibson copies other than Gibson should get a precentage of every one they sell.
As far as I am concerned, Epiphone is still the poor man's Gibson.

The elitist epiphones definately compare with hamer and tokai. Heritage uses nitro finishes though. But regular line epiphones? Maple necks, alder caps and sometimes alder bodies? The woods alone put the other three companies I named ahead of the game.
