id say a g-400 if he wants a small set neck and its very fast, feels solid and a light axe they also have the 57 humbucker(the epi version) which are very close in quality believe it or not. i own one and its the best guitar to date that ive owned, and ive owned 2 gibson sg's and a gibson invader. they are around $400 u.s. imho the best axe you can get for $400. or an lp special about $150 u.s.. ol zac has one and it plays great. it has a little bit bigger neck than the g-400, and has open coil pups. i think the sg special,$150 u.s. has the same neck. but between those three he cant lose.

I second Noeljob´s opinion... tell your pal he should try a G 400, an absolutely nice and well SG copy, or maybe if he wants warmer tone suggest a LP Studio. All features of a real Les Paul, such as set neck, arched top, but less cosmetics...

I think I am the self appointed Rondomusic.net supporter. Almost everything is under $400, and the quality is there.
I have the Agile Les Paul 3500 and I love it. All my bandmates love it too. I don't think you can go wrong with an Agile.
