I am running this on the Epi site too but that may take too long so....... I want to but my 5 year old son his first guitar for Christmas this year. I have seen the epi peewee Paul and peewee V. Does anyone have any experience with either peewee. Or can anyone recommend another style/size/make/model or brand that may better suit a 5 year old? Don't get me wrong here. I don't think he will probably even learn his first bar chord for a while. But he loves to be there when I play and he has figured out that his Barney guitar aint the real deal. Plus I know I would die with pride if I could teach him to chug away on the big E while I play some lead. Last but not least I want to buy him a real guitar before someone buys him a real set of drums. I thought he would never tear up that toy set his grandpa (mothers side) bought him.

I saw both a few years back, and they're pretty cool. The 'Paul could be played sitting down, but the V is more for standing up -- he might actually like that better! There's also a mini-Strat around if you search, possibly marketed under the Squier brand. I got a mini-sized Washburn Billy T2 Maverick at Mars (yeah, I know, I still bring up the place a lot) for playing lap steel kind of parts, but I don't know if they're still available. I liked it the best of all of 'em 'cause it had two humbuckers (the 'Paul has a single pickup). You might also want to compare them for the narrowest nut width -- for ease of play for those small hands. I remember the 'Paul being nearly as wide on the neck as a standard size guitar even though having the shorter scale string length. I think the mini Strat may be the best in that respect.

I couldn't find any info on the Internet for the Billy... but, if any of you grownups are interested, Musician's Friend is currently running a great deal on the Epiphone Les Paul PeeWee along with a little amp and gigbag. For when you feel like playing a little guitar....

the bad thing about these short scale guitars is that they are not designed for standard tuning. My daughter has an Epiphone Pee Wee black LP. She enjoys it. It's OK. Nothing to write home about. I'd take a look at some other brands before pulling the trigger.

Well, I'll take it as Gospel from the guy who works there! The ones I'd seen were in E; it would make sense that the smaller scale would lend itself to a higher pitch (the opposite of barritones), but then wouldn't the strings need to be like .007s or something? It just seems like too much tension for .009s....

Ok the wasburn Billy has a nut width of 1 mm smaller than a normal neck. And yes I had heard that you will want to tune them to a G but can tune them to an E with a string skip. ( you know start with the A for the E and use an ultra light for the little E) Not a great way to go but it may be better than tuning to a G just to show the kid something.

It never occured to me to try to use it tuned just a bit higher, perhaps F#, played like an electric mandolin or uke....
