What? Gibson Les Paul serial # on a metal plate?

The seller claims it would be in any case an original Gibson. Look at the serial number on a metal plate over the stamped/engraved MADE IN USA.

I say I smell something fishy!

I would guess that it is stolen and thats how they are trying to hide the original s#.

But I could be way off. Who knows anymore?

Well, Zac... I forget to mention that this matter has been cleared up already. These are Gibsons, but unofficial imports to Germany that came here over middlemen in the USA and Belgium in the early 90s... the serial numbers have been removed in the USA, in order to make it impossible to retrieve the guitars. The U.S. dealer who shipped them to Europe would have been obviously in great trouble and maybe had even been sued by Gibson... This case was a topic on a german board recently, but it has cleared up definitely.
