They have been making thoes in Japan for a while with the open book headstocks. We had a few pass through our plant a few years ago on their way to the winter NAMM show. Other than the obvious headstock difference they are the same as the current Japanese made Elitist guitars. I doubt if you'll ever see these for sale in music stores the the States.

Well the "open book" headstock looks very nice, in my opinion Gibson does not sell all guitars from their product line (Epiphone, Elitist, Gibson) with that particular headstock to avoid counterfeiting. I often came across those headstock overlay veneers with the beloved brand name Gibson on Ebay. With such an overlay veneer and a bit of skill it would be all to simple to fake an Epiphone or Elitist into a real Gibby. That´s why they use different headstocks, I guess. I once saw an Epiphone guitar with a headstock that was altered to an open book headstock in handicrafts at home, lol... it looked terrible.

Hey Steel: I think you are totall correct in your opinion!!!!As I was reading your post I said to myself "that makes perfect sense" I too have seen those veneers on Ebay......But it would be nice to have that headstock on an Epi ;)And save yourself $2000.00

yeah, it would be awesome to have an Elitist custom for $1000 that looks just like Gibson custom for 1/3 of the price. It would still say Elitist and bear an Epiphone serial number so that it would be identifiable. I would hate to see something like that being sold for the Gibby price and ripping people off, but it would be cool to have (for those who love the Gibson name and headstock and don't want to buy the real thing).
