Hello, I am new here. I used to be a Fender Junky but, I got over it. I am very happy with my new Trans Blue Les Paul Classic Quilt Top but as with all other guitars I have had, I feel the need to upgrade and customize. I have one scratchy pot and the switch makes noise so I am going to redo all the internals. I have read that I need CTS long shaft pots and I have read that I need CTS regular short pots. Has anyone here done this that knows for sure? I noticed the nut on mine looks like a chop shop got hold of it..anyway i was looking at Graph-Tech Trem nuts and again can not seem to find a straight answer on which one is exactly the right one. I emailed Graph-Tech but have no response yet. The nut on this brand new Epi is horrid! I honestly do not believe I have seen a nut this bad on any cheap guitar I have ever had in my hands . I appreciate any and all help. Thanks, Mike (TNTrucker)

Sorry to hear your brand new epi has problems. My quilt top was bought from Ol Geezer but like new. I don't have an answer for your question but I would like to see some pics of your guitar. Here are my two epis in the order I bought them. Les Paul Special II wine red and Les Paul Classic Quilt Top trans blue.

Hello, My guitar looks exactly like yours except you have done one thing I want to do...the black speed knobs! I know for sure now that will look great and that was going to be my first mod. I have found that different pots (which I plan on changing) require either fine or course spline knobs so, I figured I would hold off until I determne what I am going to do before ordering them. As soon as I figure out how to post pics I will post a few of mine. take care.

I never liked the way the gold knobs looked against the blue, but I didn't want to change the pots so I just got the speed knobs to fit the standard factory shafts. I even changed to the black speed knobs on my vintage sunburst. Good thinking on your part to wait till you're sure. Keep in touch with us here as you make progress....

I have a LP Classic with the red quilt top...this is my favorite.
As far as mods go....I noticed some scratching and popping sounds in the controls, not relieved by using a spray switch cleaner, and my shop guy just reccommended replacing all the guts. His opinion: Epiphones are excellent-they have good woods, the pickups are excellent, although many people either replace the pickups or complain about the woods used. In reality, where they skimp is on the electronic parts.
I had the switch (which never gave me any problems), pots, wiring, and jack replaced, all Switchcraft and CTS brands. Now, this guitar sounds better than ever. Although I once considered it, I have no plans on replacing the pickups, they sound better than before.
After seeing your photos, my next mod will be switching from the stock gold knobs to speed knobs- black, which goes with everything.

-Hey there. I went with CTS pots in my Classic Quilt Top too. I have the standard short shafts. One thing you'll have to do is open the stock holes a bit more with a 38" drill bit. The stock Epi electronics are metric and the CTS are standard. Same thing applies if you change out the p'up selector switch. This pic was taken before I replaced the top hat knobs with amber speed knobs. L8R, Matt D.
