Just got my Sheraton back with its new brass nut, which turned out very well. The combination of a little more sustain, slightly lower nut and pro setup did wonders for the Sherry. Considering this was already a very nice playing guitar, that’s saying quite a bit.
Next step will be ordering and installing new pups and electronics. Although I’d like to go with P90s in humbucker size, since it SEEMS to me this type of pup would compliment the Sherry very well, I still can’t decide on the brand.
I’ve always been satisfied with Seymour Duncan’s products and they have their “Phat Cats” but it has been almost impossible to find them with gold covers. Another option is Gibson’s P94s. Although a friend has a set in his Sherry and loves them, I keep reading reviews complaining how noisy they are and “lackluster”. The last choice I’m looking at are the Rio Grande “Bastard” and “Fat Bastard” for the bridge position. I’ve been told these are terrific and worth the added 60 cycle noise of all single coils. Again, impossible to get with gold covers. I realize the sound is the truly important issue here but aesthetics count too! I guess I’ll get the Rio Grandes in black and may end up installing a gold cover on the mounting rings just to dress them up a little bit. I’m not unhappy with the Sherry’s current pups, a set of SD 59s, I’m hoping the P90 while make it even more versatile.
Along with the pups, I’ll be installing a RS wiring Premium Historic kit. The word is that they make the volume and tone controls…useable. The package has matched sets of pots and Hovland caps. RS has also stated that they will offer switches and jacks to go along with the wiring kit, so that the whole electronics package can be changed with their product line. I’m NOT looking forward to this job! Not only is it difficult in a semi hollow body guitar, it’s also pricey.
The last step will be installing a TonePro bridge and tailpiece. Although I had thought to begin with this modification, it will now be last since I just setup the guitar and might as well wait until I send it back to the shop for ANOTHER setup!
