Yesterday I went to a guitar store and came across two Gibson guitars that caught my eye. Two Gibson Specials, one SG and one Flying V. Both in that worn and faded semi-matte red laquer finish. To be honest, they caught my eye because of their affordable prices, but as I took a closer look I must say they weren´t much convincing. For that price (1100 Euro for the V and 880 Euro for the SG) I´d rather buy an Epi and spend additional bucks for aftermarket pickups or I´d choose an Elitist. To me those "Specials" looked horrible, not to say "cheap", the only thing I liked was the fretboard inlays that showed little half moons. Any comments on that affordable Gibbys?

I believe I posted somthing similar a few months ago regarding the new faded Gibson Les Paul Special DC I saw hanging in Sam Ash. I also first noticed the price, but when I actually held it, I was pretty disapointed. The body itself was okay, but the flat black finish was pretty cheap. I think I said in the other post that I could do a better job in my garage with spray cans!! Even the "Gibson" decal on the headstock looked like it was peeling up on one corner! I bought an Epi LP junior (single humbucker) at Guitar Center for $99 that blew this Gibson away in the looks department!! The black finish on this Epi is flawless and looks like a mirror! For the amount of money Gibson wants for them, I think they could do a little better with the finish. I could rub my fingernail across the grain and feel all the bumps. I was pretty disapointed too.

I am extremely happy with my Gibby LP Faded DC, in fact that is usually the first guitar I reach for.

i really like the flying V's...on my someday wishlist. i've wondered whether it would be a better to get a real gibby or get a korina and mod it to my liking. i think the epi's are definitely a better looling guitar. but playability..haven't had the chance to test.

Especially when it comes to a Flying V, I´d say go for an Epi and mod it to your demands. You have a better looking guitar then and I like the neck joint of the Epis by far better (they allow easier access to higher frets). I have and had several Epi V´s and all are very well made and had a good playability, never had a problem to set a perfect action. Only the Gothic V I had was terribly light weighted and the neck was heading downwards all the time. I´d suggest one of the new upgraded '67 models, that now have three controls like the original has.

I have played a used Gibson SG Special with the half moon inlay. It was in a pawn shop for $400.00 U.S. I liked it well enough to pay 400 if I was in the market for one. But there are some used Epis I would probly like to have more. It had a nice red finish and played well. I don't have any experience with the Vs.

like ive said time & time again, my sg 400 vintage epi, the one on my avatar, is the best guitar ive ever owned.i guess gibson calls it the "FADED". call it what you will, i call mine "BAD ASS", thats what they ought to call it. ive owned my fair share of gibbys in my day, but theres no need to buy a similar product with a higher price tag. my epi plays better than any gibby ive ever owned. im not slaming gibson at all what so ever, but epiphones have come a long way. im an honest epi fan, but i would buy a gibson at the right price. but untill the price comes down for a workin man in my position a good epi will do!

I recently played an Epi Korina at my local shop...man what a piece of crap! Honestly guys, it felt like a plastic toy! I didnt even plug it in...I was VERY dissapointed in how light if felt (I know thats the point) but mostly how the fret board felt like it was plastic....not nice epi

the giby faded Vs are cool....but id rather have the epiys, more options....gold hardware ect...plus the whole epiy vs gibson thing is a bunch of wack. ive had a bunch of flyin Vs , all gibys great axes....but i love the epiys price , so yours truly can stock up , and save.... 8-)my latest V is an epiy korina 58 V , and it compares very sweet to all the gibys , i love gibsons...not the price. sean

The faded finish looks older, feels faster, is nitro instead of polly, is thinner, and is cheeper. All of these are advantages in my book.
The pickups in the SG are thick sounding with plenty of mids, while the 496 is harsh sounding and muddy. The faded SG also has a nice thick neck.
The pickups in the V are the same as in the standard V's and Explorers.
The faded Gibsons have ebony fretboards, which can be desireable for cleans as well as to add some clarity to the otherwise mahogany guitar.

;D the only thing i really liked about the fades...sg or the V...is the $$$$$. you get a decent giby for very little bucks. if there is a draw back, no hard shell case. i was very well thinking of sellin me strat, and my epiy explorer...and with the proceeds , snaggin me a faded V. there is a music store by the house that has 2 of them , and these are the 1st issuse style...with the moon inlays vs the newer ones just have dots.... ;D i can do dots....but the moon inlays i think are left overs from gibys goth line.....that they dumped for the vodo axes they make now.....any how.. sean
