Hi! Seems I'll get a 12-string some time soon. A friend of mine is parting with his 12-string, an old Lowden. Can't wait to see it.
I've only seen one other Lowden, a 6-string, which is a great acoustic guitar.

Well, Lowden still exists, but from what I've heard they had some financial troubles in the 90s and quality went down. Can't say anything about their current stuff. I haven't even seen that 12-string yet, so I don't even know what model it is or what wood. Only thing I know that it's an odl Lowden 12-string and mutual friend told me that it's a very good guitar.
The guy selling it is a great guitarist, serious jazz guy, damn fine teacher from what I've heard. i know he doesn't buy any crap.
For those who don't know them, George Lowden is from Northern Ireland and has been building guitars since around 1980. I'm not sure if people know his guitars in America, but here in Austria (and I guess all over Europe) they are well renowned guitars, you don't see them in great numbers, but usually fine instruments.

JoMan, I think I saw a program on the TV (Possibly the Blues Series on PBS) where George Lowden was dong some studio work with Van Morrison and the narrator mentioned him being a guitar maker as well as a fine musician. Same person?

Possibly, I'd have to check that. But if he was Irish, chances are that it was him.
