...hey tjpatt....
...I'm 53...starting my third year of learning guitar....
...I'd recommend starting out with group lessons...do you get adult ed course news letters from the County Recreation Dept in your area... we have an eight week Beginners Course in my area that meets once a week for an hour....I also took an Intermediate Course too....
...in the mean time you could learn how to play basic chords through a book or chart....
...this gave me time to develop callouses and strengthen left hand muscles....

Hey tjpatt...I am 52 and have been playing for years. I have never taken a lesson...am I the next Jimi Hendrix? Nah! Do I love to play....YEAH! Learning the guitar is very much a matter of interest and persistence but it does help to have someone around who also plays. Ask around at local music stores and do not be shy, there is always someone around willing to show off a lick or two to get you going! Welcome aboard and have a blast!

tjpatt & wicked
Ain't it great learning guitar at our age ?? I'm 45. Up to the age of 18 I thrashed guitars in the garage with buddies, even drove people out of the door in a few local bars. Along came beer, wine, women (no song !) Didn't pick up a guitar again until I was 37 !
Having helped to raise 3 kids, hold down a job blah blah blah, you have far more patience to learn the basics, you ain't as quick on the uptake as your kids but have learnt to stick at it.
At 39 and having loved funk since the 70's, the moment for my gig debut arrived, 60 minutes passed in a blur and we were getting applause (no I hadn't paid them !!)
I taught myself, but a really huge help is to play with friends and grow together, friends won't laugh they will help and encourage, also, learn what you like, you know those songs backwards so you'll know when you are playing them correctly.
good luck

Thanks "Chris in UK" you input is very helpful & motivating. I can't wait to get started. Haven't yet but soon. Will take some lessons first to learn the basics. And with some help for my kids I should be ok.
Take care & best of luck. Tom

On the subject of language, I think the very basis of "hillbilly" speak is to cut out absolutly every un-needed sound. Instead of pronouncing every single syllable, we only say the ones that are needed for understanding. Last year, my girlfriend and I went to North Carolina, and I understood everything, but my girlfriend just stood shaking her head. It's kinda like the opposite of German, where every thing is lovingly procounced to the max.
Here are a couple of good examples of "hillbilly"courtesy of Jeff Foxworthy :
AORTA--They Ought To--"Aorta make a law..." JAWJA--Georgia JEETYET--Did You Eat Yet?--"Jeetyet? We-uns got enuf" WICHADIJA--"With You Did You"--"You dint brang yore tow-strap wichadija?" YOUNS--You Ones--"Youns can park yore trucks hyere.

Hey Tom
Give us an update, .... How is it going, have you found inspiration, just master those basic open chords and the 4 main barre shapes, you'll then accidentally stumble across classic songs and realise it ain't that difficult to "make" a song, you just go to be able to remember them !!
Do get back and advise
Chris

I hope your playing is progressing well. If you still haven't decided on a teacher, I'd like to echo the previous suggestion that you consider taking some group classes through your city's recreation department, or better yet, through a local community college.
After that, you're in a better position to figure out what you want to do next. I really suggest lessons once you find someone who will work well with you. Ask around--guitar players, music stores, and other places are likely to have suggestions. The benefit of a good teacher is that he or she will help you get where you want to be faster--you won't develop bad habits on your own, and you'll get lots of pointers to have things make more sense quicker.
(By the way, I'm not a teacher, so this isn't self-serving!)

Hello all, Just to keep you up to date. I have just been messing around with the guitar so far & my kids have been showing me a thing or two. I did get at practice amp (crate 15W) for Father's Day. I will take your suggestions & check out community group lessons or lessons at a local music store or community college. I'v been so busy, but i promise i will get to it. Thanks for all you concern & advise. I really appeciate all your help. One thing about my guitar is that the adj. screw that holds the pick-up came loose somehow (there isn't much play in those adj. screws. I did fix it myself with the help of two other hands. I's a bear getting the screw & spring matched up withthe threads. I just hope i have it adj. to the right height. Anyway take care all. Hope to hear from you soon.

Welcome, man! I`m 52 and been trying to play guitar for about 3 years. Go for it! You might want to try E Media Guitar for Beginners. Everything is on the CD for you. It covers all the basics, and you have a choice as to whether you watch the lessons in tablature or notation.
