When i'm playing I always pick the string in front of the neck pickup... The pick is touching the pickup .... But i'm a lot faster this way and i wonder is it can damage the pickup (LPS humbucker)

I try to shoot for the spot between the pickups, closer to the neck pickup. I read something on Bill Lawrence's web site about right hand techniques that I thought was interesting. Look under #5 of the output section on this page and you will see it. It talks about finding the "sweet spot" on your string and how you can create all sorts of sound based on where on the string you pick, what angle you pick, and how forceful you pick. www.billlawrence.com/Pages/Pickupology/Introduction.htm

Bill is good, I had the pleasure of spending about 6 hours with him and his wife Becky at their new shop in California last year. He did some amazing things with his guitar.

Here is a good example where i'm picking Look at the Gibson SG player (Greg Hetson) (SAVE AS) www.multimania.com/brfr/sg.mpg(BTW... The guy playing the Les Paul is Brian Baker ... He has been ask to play in tour with REM and to be in the new G'n''R band but refused in order to play in Bad Religion )

It's somewhat similar to playing an acoustic or bass. If you pluck next to the bridge you get a more staccato sound, picking near the fretboard gives you something quite a bit different, etc. I'd say see what the song calls for and go for it. Ty

I also pick near the neck pickup- I find the sound richer and deeper, especially when the treble pickup is on, picking there adds a different sound. I do find it more challenging to control the picking though- it seems easier to do when the right hand is setting against the tune-o-matic.
There is also a natural harmonic near the neck pickup that sounds cool.
