Hey everyone: Just wondering what sort of time you put into practice... Well I myself try to get at least two hours a day in,working on scales, theory, and messing around learning new songs.Through the week it is pretty tough to get all the playing in that I want,(full time job, household chores, kids ect..)but on weekends I like to spend as much time as possible playing.....Guitar lesson is Friday night, and I always come away with a new scale or mode or theory to ceep me going... ;)So what sort of practice/playing time are you putting in?

Practice... did I ever practise? Lol, no... ;D I only played a lot and still do, two official band rehearsals a week, and in between I often grab my guitar and doodle around, figuring out new riffs, or just soloing around. Since I am the only guitarist in our band now since a couple of months I play (or better practise) more, need to build up speed again and re-improve my soloing. I always wanted to be the rhythm guitarist, but somehow I found out, I´m doing better alone. Lots of "lead players" lack a precise feel for rhythm and groove in my opinion, and it was often "me vs the other guy" not "playing together" , so I decided to do it on my own... now I need to practise alot, hehe. Back in the day when I was younger I was the "better" guitarist of two in a band often, so I had to play leads, but never felt comfortable with it. Then, later, I teamed up with lots of virtuosos, but it didn´t work out in the best ways, like I mentioned above. Okay back to practice now: My point of view is the following. 4 times 15 minutes or 3 times 20 minutes a day (and each day!) is more useful than to spend hours without breaks on specific days, for example only on saturday. What I suggest is not to spent all the focus on soloing and scales, a good feel for rhythm is also important. Most recently I spend alot of time on picking my guitar with an almost clean sound and practise some accuracy. Guitar playing is more than just shredding powerchords and doodeling...

Morning !!
I have a gig most weeks, I guess I don't actually "practice", after a day at work and a walk with the dog, I usually do about an hour, no particular framework but I always start with a few scales, to me it is more of a therapeutic treatment, I can honestly feel the stress draining away.
I am currently putting work into developing lead playing, being a funkateer I am pretty much strictly rhythm !!

I play every day, whenever I get a chance, usually 2-3 hours total. I warm up by doing some pull-offs up and down the neck, then practice scales, then I get out some sheet music and learn new songs. Right now im learning Good Times, Bad Times by Led Zeppelin. Then after that I just solo around, and practice playing slide if I have time

No offence to anyone, but geez how can you have set things you do?? What the heck? I have set warmups and routines when I work out, but playing guitar?? Maybe Im the crazy one but to me its just fun so I pick it up OFTEN and just play whatever I feel like...Personally I could never "practice" I just play

Personally I could never "practice" I just play Quite the same here... I wouldn´t consider it as practice what I do, I just play...

The only times I think of playing as practice is if something gives me more than the ordinary ammount of trouble, then I just use the time to get the part nailed, or, if I'm writing something. I also agree w/Steele, the best way for me, at least, is to hit it for a half-hour and then put it down three of four times a day rather than to burn myself out in one go.

I've haven't played much this week at all.... Probably cause I've been making a chain mail shirt and I sometimes get metal fileings stuck to my regular shirt so I don't play guitar in fear of scratching up the finish... course I sometimes just change my shirt

Nope. I know some people who are in the SCA. I've heard that chain mail isnt the best for the fights you do in SCA, some yes, others no.
This one I'm making now is only costume grade cause I got the rings from a friend.

ok...lol....had to ask. no..chain mail is mainly for show. with the type of fighting we do with chain mail when you get hit real good the chain leaves a nice pattern bruise on your skin. it does look cool though. very time consuming to make. using steel or aluminum ?

I must admit this one I'm making is not time consuming. I cheated, 14ga 1/2 rings. Theres about 5 rings to a square inch and a half. Its really fast to knit. I'm using galvanized steel, if it were aluminum... it would be waaay to weak cause of the large aspect ratios of the rings. If your interested in anything chain mail check this site out! www.theringlord.com and the forums of it, really helpful place. Also there's my site, about chain mail. But you can see some guitar stuff in my gallery

I usually spend about 2 -3 hrs weekdays practicing playing solos in different keys. And I usually practice by playing along to songs on a CD. My CD player is hook up to my amp (via the CD input). I will play the same set of 15 to 20 songs over and over again until I'm at ease with it. Then it's to another set of songs from another set of CDs. That way, I get to learn the songs and enjoy the practice as well!
On weekends, I may put in the same time but it all depends on the family and other home errands.

i figured i would bring alive another old thread because it sure is dead aruond here lately. ive got a theory to music. play it. i pick up the guitar when i feel like i need to, unless we have band practice or a show. i play quite often, well alot actually. i have no set order or routine, ritual that i follow. one thing i do is play w/ my eyes closed or not look at all . thats when i know ive got something down. i dont do it all of the time, just to see if i can.
