...I may repeat a few things here from other threads...be patient with me...I'd like to keep this at a generic religious level because sometimes people get uncomfortable talking about religion...I'm not trying to promote any particular denomination....
...when I first started playing guitar...one thing I said I'd never do was play before my friends and neighbors in church...well...I was wrong....
...I'm no "Andy Rooney Religious Wacko"...far from it...I do attend services regularly....
...I'm glad that last august I got my nerve up and approached one of the directors for the contemporary folk group at church....
...if your church offers an opportunity for you to play...take the time to check it out...an added benefit...you'd be surprised at how fast the service moves when you're playing...it's over in no time flat....
...on another thread I described how great my music teacher was...well...I found that there's an abundance of talent in this group as well....
...first off...I lucked out...didn't have to audition...they just asked how good I was at playing guitar...told them I was a rank beginner..."that's okay...we won't plug you into an amp...can you sing"..."about as well as I play"..."that's okay...we just won't mike you"...and that's where it started....
...it's tablature...and for the most part...the songs use the same basic chords...you can't help but get better...although I'm a slow learner and am still unplugged...so what...I'm getting better....
...after that first Sunday...my daughter disavowed any knowledge that she had a father...that was until her best friend's mother leaned over and said..."you know...he looks like he's having a lot of fun up there"...she's since acknowledged that the group sounds pretty decent...and...dad isn't so bad either....
(Note...dad's still not allowed to go to Starbuck's to practice...my friends go to Starbucks to get coffee....)
...if you've never played before a live audience and you'd like to get over your fear of stage fright...church is a great place to start...if you think about it...a lot of famous musicians got their start there....
...don't be afraid of making a mistake either...it's over with at the speed of sound....
