...uh oh......... Fortune.com 6 Hot Trends That May Go Bust # 3. Fender Stratocasters Hungry for a maple-neck beauty? What cost $175 in 1969 jumped to $17,000 two years ago and more than $30,000 today, says Richard Friedman, co-owner of New York’s We Buy Guitars. www.fortune.com/fortune/slideshow/0,,1086579,00.html?promoid=cnnmoney ...I think they picked on the Strat because it's the best known electric to the general public........

...couldn't agree more with you...expensive guitars do not make us better players.......................
...still...if what the article indicates comes to pass....there may be some interesting guitars up for sale...as investors seek to cut their losses........................

With regard to investment, I view guitars the same as I do shotguns (now there's something you don't hear everyday ). By that I mean, I'd buy something because I like it and/or it's meant to fill a specific purpose. If it happens that the item ends up having some sort of collectible value to it, so much the better. But, and this is a BIG but, I wouldn't let the collectible status keep me from using it for its intended purpose. I have an old, 1920's era Ithaca side by side, 20g shotgun that I use it all the time and I wouldn't think of hanging it on the wall. Same for guitars. That's just my .02.

In my opinion that makes you a guitarist, not a collector. If someone likes to collect guitars strictly for their value or for prestige and not to actually play them, then I guess that is ok, but I could never do that with a guitar. I would have to play the thing. I am sure that I would treat it with a bit more care than the rest, meaning I wouldn't drag it to every gig or jam session I went to. But I couldn't just keep it hidden, or in some display case, not to be touched. That just doesn't seem right for an instrument. If a guitar gets so valuable that I was afraid to play it then I would have to sell it to a collector. So I guess I am saying I couldn't own a guitar as an investment. But thats just me. Zac

Me too. I know you told me that you have quite a few guitars, and even some that are still in the box. But you also told me that you intend on using them someday. And even if you don't, that is what you choose to do with them, so it's a good thing. I can see myself doing the same thing, given the right circumstances. But you and I are musicians. If I were not a guitarist, then I could see buying a guitar for it's appreciable value. I am not saying that my guitars and gear aren't investments, because they are. If Blue were suddenly worth a new car or a house, I would have to get the cash and let her go. But I guess the point I am having a hard time putting my finger on, is that personally, I didn't buy my gear for it's appreciable value, but rather it's use to me here and now. Zac

If I had more money than I knew what to do with then I'd probably start collecting guitars...but that's definately not going to happen any time soon There's still plenty of guitars/amps/effects that I'd like to try out that at this point buying something and not putting it to good use seems like a bit of a waste.
