I have one of those 7 string les pauls.... vintage sunburst, only it's black at the edge and not brown like it should be. I sanded down the back and sides as well as the neck and the back and sides of the headstock, the "trans black" rubbed right off and left behind the wood sealer which has a trans brown stain mixed into it. It's nice, also I went a little deeper in some spots and the brown came off to reveal either maple or limed mahogany. Gave it a nice worn look. Used urethane on those parts for protection.
So, now I'm left with this stock looking top, very glossy, not a classic vintage sunburst. I know that the burst will come off with sandpaper however, leaving behind sealed wood. It might be blonde at the end, it might be amber. Any thoughts?

I am so glad that most of my guitars have a "solid" colour finish, the tought of taking sandpaper etc to them makes me feel cold.
I hope you end up with the desired result but couldn't possibly attack any of my babies in this way !!
