I have been wanting to ask you this for a while now, but I always forget. Could you translate the words of that Ramstien song Du Haust? I don't know any of the german language to speak of and always wondered what in the heck that song was about. And if it would make a good tune if translated. I kind of liked it when I first heard it, but then the radio burned me out on it and there was a rumor it was a gay band and then it kind of went away. So what the deal?

i heard it meant "you hate". Here is what i found for the chorus:
You
You Hate
you hate me

you hate me to say
(du hast mich gefragt)
and i did not obey
(und ich hab nichts gesagt)

Oooh. Not a very cheery song then. Well thanks all the same Smooth my friend. But I guess the words would still fit the song after translation.

Well, first of all I must say it is a play of words. The original written title is "Du hast" not "Du hasst". "Du hast" means "you did", "you have" or "you got", while "Du hasst" would actually mean "you hate". The pronunciation is the same...  To cut it short, german language is complicated. "Du hast" refers to "gefragt" and is used as an auxiliary. So "Du hast mich gefragt" means "You did ask me/you have asked me". So it goes like this. You You did You did ask me and I did not reply/answer/say anything Willst Du bis der Tod Euch scheidet treu mir sein für alle Tage? - Nein! Nein! Will you be faithful and true until death does us apart? No! No! Not very much of a lyric, just a play of words.  |

Hey Steel thanks for the reply and translation. Now that I know what the song is saying I think I liked it better when I didn't know. lol And yes I bet the German language is very complexed and hard to learn. Back to the song, I will say this about it, it sure sticks in your head. All day it's been like

Oha, now that I was curious I downloaded the english version of this song from the internet. And the english lyrics actually go like Smooth posted them. Hehe, well obivously the play of words works only in german and so they decided really to say "hate". D'oh. But well seemingly the phonetics is more important than the meaning when it comes to songs. ;D But speaking about Rammstein, did you check out their song "Sonne"? Woohoo, a nice one I can highly recommend. Rammstein may not be a revelation guitarwise or a musical delicacy, but some songs are very catchy. |

Very few bands manage to sound so thoroughly P***ed off in their delivery. One that comes to mind is Helmet, but their stuff sounds like a put on, whereas Ramstein sounds like they mean it.

Yea Ramstein sounds mad alright. Here are a few more that come to my mind. Sacred Reich (Surf Nicaragua is my fav album by them) Metallica ( Kill em All ) Slayer (any album) Rigormortis (any) Anthrax (a few songs sell it) S.O.D. storm troopers of death M.O.D. method of distruction Sadition (never went global but were big around here) Pantera (Cowboys from Hell) Just to name a few. |
