I'm just curious as to the extent of the experience we have floating around in here. While I was in North Carolina, I played in a Celtic band, and we played a St. Patty's Day festival with around 2,500 folks there. It was too cold, tho, and after that year the band only did it one more time. Hard to fret an instrument with frozen digits ! !

I have played mostly gigs with a crowd size in the 75-200 range, but we did a few shows in the bigger numbers - 500+. One night we played at an outdoor theatre...warming up for a movie. We couldn't even see how big the crowd was because it was a night movie. When the lights came up so we could clear the stage, we saw the audience - 750 or more. Wow, that was fun.

I voted 100-500, but come to think of it, I did play a jam with my dad at a "Sons of Herman Hall" way out somewhere when I was in my late teens, that probly had 6 to 7 hundred people there. I only played one set and then spent the rest of the night enjoying the party. I remember it more as the first time I danced w/a girl and not so much the set I played in front of all those people. ;D . But since then the largest crowd was probly 300 to 350. Mostly I have played for smaller numbers around 75 to 150 if that many.

I voted 100 - 500 as well, but like Zac said, in general the crowds were more like 75 - 200 people. But there were some gigs, including our last one that had about 500 spectators. What do you guys like better? Playing for 50 people, and you know most of them as pals or do you prefer performing for a bigger "crowd", that is somewhat more anonymous? I must say, well I admit it, playing for friends always makes me nervous. So I like bigger crowds. Personally I often think that friends or small crowds where you actually know almost each single face always expect "something special". The most horrible scenario are visitors in the rehearsal room. LMAO, don´t ask me why... I am a decent musician, I played lots of gigs, but three guys (maybe musicians theirselves, d'oh!) or even a chick I really like on the couch in our rehearsal room make me shiver and tremble... lol ;D By the way: we will do a special Christmas Show in a very small club on december 23rd. The venue´s capacity is about 70 - 100 people. I hope and actually fear (lol ) all the local faces will show up.

Its a toss up for me. The smaller crowds are sometimes easier to reach out to, but then again they can be not into it, and it feels like you're playing for an empty room. The bigger crowds have the advantage of more people to potentialy get into your show, but once again, if they aren't into it, a large crowd is pretty scary. We made a rule a while back that no-one gets to come to our practices, cause just as soon as someone not in the band walks in the door, the band's attitude changes from the truely open and conducive work session into a show. The band starts to perform instead of work. Most of the folks who would come and see us play are put off by the ammount of time spent stopping and going over and over stuff anyway, so it's not too big an issue.

Just last Saturday, we had a Christmas@Stadium party. It was a small outdoor stadium which seats about 2,000. The stadium was full and we also had additional seating, so the crowd was closer to 2,500. Had a great time with the band. I played rhythm guitar. The other musos were drummer, lead guitarist, bassist, two keyboardists and one flautist.
That was my first outdoor gig. Great fun!
