This coming Sat, October 9 would have been the 64th birthday of one of Rock Music's Greatest Musicians, John Lennon
And as irony plays out his killer Mark David Chapman has a parole hearing this week to see if he should be set free.

Excellent! That is great news that he will stay in prison. I have to second that. You americans know how to treat your villains right! I highly doubt that this killer would be in prison still if he was in Germany. The most likely thing if the whole incident had happened over here is, they might have sent John Lennon´s killer to a lunacy asylum and declared him as certifiably insane. I say keep him under lock and key for the rest of his life.

yes steel we do know how to treat our criminals. texas has the highest execution rate in the country. imho its only right to give killers what they deserve. my country of texas is now putting an express lane. we need to send chapman there.

Well guys, this is not what I meant... We europeans (especially we germans) consider death penalties as not civilized, almost barbarian... maybe because of our sad history during the nazi times,... but no human being hast the right to take another one´s life. But a life long prison sentence is well justified in any case for deeds like murder. Just my opinion, you can´t take an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth...

I have to agree with you , Steel. If we took an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth, pretty soon we'd all be walking with a seeing-eye dog, and eating apple sauce and soup. I like the idea of letting Mark sit there and rot away the rest of his life in a meaningless and depressing existence. Mental anguish is the correct punishment for something this terrible, and it lasts, while death is quick.

...in the U.S. criminal law is enforced state by state unless specified in the Constitution...eg...treason or cruel & unusual punishment issues as written in the 1st Amendment...the Bill of Rights..........
...that's why it might appear that capital punishment is applied inconsistently...it's a states' rights issue for 51 states...some states are liberal...some states like Texas & Virginia are conservative...........
...my own opinion...Mark Chapman is a good example of why there is no such thing as life in prison...over a period of time...political swings between conservatives & liberals cause parole boards to re-evaluate prisoners differently..............
...in other countries...life in prison actually means life in prison...not in the U.S....a lot of the 70's/80's cocaine cowboys are coming up for parole..."they've served over half of their lives in prison...they've learned their lesson..."...ya...right...with over crowded prisons...this becomes an economic problem as well as a judicial decision........
...again...my own opinion...Mark Chapman will never be released no matter how good he is behind bars because he'd be a 'dead man walking' once he's released...he's safer behind bars............
