Well, I had to play bass in my older brothers band for a while when he had no bassist. It was fun, but since I am a guitarrist, I really want to play guitar. By playing guitar you automaticily learn to play bass. Just a little wierd with the big frets...

By playing guitar you automaticily learn to play bass. Sorry to disagree, but great bass playing is a whole different thing and an art unto itself....

Sorry to disagree, but great bass playing is a whole different thing and an art unto itself.... When I played bass I was aware of the fact that there is a difference between playing "bass" and "bass guitar". I guess I played bass guitar... ;D

I second the competent vs. great bass distinction... and then great vs. virtuoso is a whole new beast unto itself. I'd say a competent bassist can hold the rhythm section together, a great bassist will not only do this but harmonize and guide the song (a la J.P. Jones) as an actual instrument rather than a glorified noise maker. A virtuoso is a virtuoso, the two off the top of my head are Jaco and Victor Wooten (the second... wow.). Ty
