Gotta give mad props to Ol' Geezer for tipping me off to the Arion pedals. Yesterday, I stopped by a fairly new local store and low and behold, they had a few Arion pedals in stock. They didn't have the compression box (Dynacomp knock off) that I was looking for but they did have a Tube Mania and Arion Overdrive. They let me test drive both through a classic Ampeg stereo 2x12 combo and I found the Tube Mania to be surprisingly good sounding. It has a level, tone and distortion control for dialing down or up, is battery operated and enclosed in a plastic case. It seems a fairly stout plastic case but like Ol' Geezer said, any road worthiness is a question but for basement rock-stars it should be fine.
Hooked into the BJr with the LP it adds as little or as much grit as you want at even the lowest volumes. And using the built in level control you can crank the BJr's volume and master to get the BJr cooking then use the Arion's level control to control the show. All in all, a decent little stomp box for 30 bucks.
Oh yea, I also picked up a Cry Baby and believe or not, I'm not too thrilled with it. The wah and squawk it gives it great sounding but I'm dissappointed at how little sweep there is in the pedal. There is plenty of range in the physical movement of the pedal but the amount of sweep that actually affects the sound is not what I thought it would be. Maybe my memory is biased but I remember my old Morley pedal and how it had such a huge range of sweep and sound. This doesn't come close. I may return it but don't have a clue which, if any, would be better?
