Maybe try an old Ibanez tube screamer and set the distortion level very low, I have good memories concerning this... And also Marshall had their Guv´nor distortion pedal accompanied by a fellow device in that series, I can´t remember the name, I mean it was Blues Master or something alike and it sounded very lovely, sweet and smooth, warm overdriven sounds...

I agree with Steelpriest , I have owned both of those pedals in the past and they blues it up when needed. The Marshall Gov'ner has a little tube in it and that adds ,,,,well that tube sound ;D but if you have a bit more to spend I have to say go with the Digitech RP line I have the RP 200A and it has more presets that I can name, a bunch of them are actual artist presets and then you get a bunch from digi as well and you can go in and adjust the perameters to suit your liking. But as for the BD-2 ,,I played it at a store and its cool I was just in the market for a pedal that does alot more so I went with the RP-200A.

The Guv´nor had a tube? I dare to doubt this... I speak of the original first Marshall Guv´nor, ...this black box with the four control knobs and the trusty footswitch. It could be operated with a 9 volt block battery so it is impossible that it had a tube, hmmm... but I don´t know about the second series, I never had those, only the real Guv´nor of the first series and this was pure solid state. But a digitech RP200 should be nice, I tried the RP50 in a store and even this little gizmo was amazing.

Was it maybe a Hughes & Kettner Tubeman? Brushed silver design? Or an old Guyatone? Hehe...

i have owned quite a few od/ distortion pedalsin me day.the boss ds-1 is a little too much for blues. try a bodd od-1 or od-2. go to musician friend online. you can samlpe the boss pedals. i think you would like the digitech rp200a. i own one now. it is the very best effect pedal ive ever come in contact with. too many variation to list.

I've been to the music store the other day and tried a couple of Boss overdrives: BD-2, SD-1 and OD-3. I picked up SD-1 because it gave a nice warm sound (for a digital pedal ) and worked well as a clean boost. BD-2 was also great, nice bluesy tones and just enough of gain for some heavier stuff, however it was way too treble-y. OD-3 just sounded like a fart to me, I was really disappointed. Tubescreamer works better with single coils, while BD-2 is really a humbucker beast (IMHO). It's a very decent pedal for the price.

I had a BD-2 and found that it muddied up to easy for my taste.
