hey buddy i've got the mics and the interface for laying down tracks through the amp, i was wondering about using something else at times to get a few effects in their and using a soundgate. thinking along the lines of a v-amp or a pod. these can go direct to computer right ? the alesis gives me mic ability and software for mixing. but i was wondering about throwing some other things in. like adding some percussion. or just adding some sounds i can't pull out of my amps and rig. just trying to complete the setup here

The Alesis would be where I would connect a POD or V-amp, not directly to the soundcard. Don't just use it for vocals; you'll have more control over any signal level and tonality, as well as a better way to monitor. Those inserts are where you can patch-in effects such as reverbs and compressors rather than going through them like you do with stompboxes. This opens you up to higher end (more pro but pricier) line-level units. I highly recommend PODs, especially the earlier versions (the original and the 2.0, which I believe is still being sold new); they create tracks that sound to me like good saturated analog tape recordings. I'm lost as to what you're thinking of for percussion, but a keyboard that has such sounds would also plug into the Alesis. Remember, going through it opens you up to be able to apply any effects the Alesis contains, as well as the option to insert outboard gear. More G-A-S............
