Ok, my band just bailed on me, and have WAY too much stuff written, and no where to put it all together. I am SO strapped for cash, but I seriously need to make some music. I am looking at the Zoom PS-02. The effects aren't essential, but i need a bass line, and a drum machine(as I lack a drumset right now, and I don't have a bass), it has 4 tracks(besides the drum and bass tracks) and 10 "virtual" tracks for each. I'd have a couple tracks of guitar, and track of vocals. It has a built in mic, which I will likely not use because I have an sm58 from when I was in my band, but i may use it for acoustic tracks, and maybe even micing my amp(if the shure lacks). I don't know if this is gonna work like I'm hoping it will, so I need you guys to give me your opinions(expessially you, cage77). I guess i got too used to a 2 guitar band. So everything I right has leads and rhythm. I will also use it just to put down a track of guitar, and play leads to the simple track I put down. So any hlep would be a preciated on whether this is a good idea, and any alternatives that would work out better! Aaron PS- Getting a band is not an option, I'm like "Neil Peart" picky! ;D

When your budget is limited, what about a used analog 8 track cassette studio like the old Tascam or Yamaha ones? Often hardly used ones are found that are in brilliant condition... everyone has seemingly swapped over to hard disc recorders, so this analog ones are sometimes dirt cheap. You could afford also a hardware drum machine like the Alesis SR 16 and an affordable bass guitar then... 8 tracks that can be played back simultaneously are the minimum you need. "Virtual tracks" can not be played simultaneously they are only for alternative versions of a track and can be swapped against another ones. If your budget is not that limited I recommend at least an 8 track HD recorder, but in any case a stand alone drum machine that is programmable to your own demands.

I HIGHLY doubt that an anolog 8 track, a drum machine, and a bass guitar(amp too), it going to cost even CLOSE to 300$ Ca...by strapped for cash I mean 120$ a month budget! I could care less about the virtual tracks(and yes, I knew they could not be played simultaneously), its still truly a 7 track player. It has stereo tracks for the drum machine, a mono track for hte bass, and then 4 tracks for recording(a vocal track(maybe 2), and a couple guitar tracks is all I need). I think its exactly what I want, plus even if I'm not recording stuff, it could be a portable little mini amp, because I could hook my guitar into it, and headphones on the output. Thanks for hte info though Steele! Aaron

Aaron -
Ok....the Zoom device seems pretty cool. Althou, I do believe you might be more interested in the PS-04. Anyways, what is your budget? If it is really small, one option would be to save your money for a better device and better equipment. In the meantime, buy yourself an inexpensive 4 track cassette machine. Sure, you won't have drums or "real" bass, but you will still be able to get you ideas down. While you're working cheap, save your money and buy good gear that will last and that you will be able to still use with more and more gear.
If your heart is really stuck on something like the Zoom, let''s here about your budget, what you can afford now, and where you want to go and when. Also, what do you have now? Computer, mic, guitar....what else?

well I'm on a 120 a month(Canadian, so about 60 a month in the US, the big difference is that gear cost more up here), and I have quite a bit of money right now. I could go crazy and buy some nicer stuff, but I need a car soon, and I'm buying a new bmx...so about 300 is all I have, that can buy about 200 dollars worth of gear US. And thats my mistake, I meant to put the PS-04! ;D SO yeah, that is what I'm looking at and that is my budget. I have a guitar(accesseries such as an amp and fx), a computer, and a mic lol and thats it. I have a couple questions, can you listen to the other tracks while you record a track? One of hte main reasons that I want this is so I can have a rhythm section(including rythm guitar)that I can sing to and play leads to. IS that feasable with the zoom unit? Thanks tons! Aaron
