Very much like the last new poster, I have just recently purchased my first electric guitar after nearly 30 years of playing acoustic guitar. I have also been playing the electric bass semi-professionally for 10 years with various bands in the Seattle area.
On Memorial Day weekend, I went into a Guitar Center, and came out with a new Epiphone Les Paul Classic Quilt in Vintage (tobacco) Sunburst. I also snagged a Marshall MG30DFX as a "bedroom" amp to help me get to know my new electric LP.
This Epi Classic is SPECTACULAR! For $375 (US) I have never seen a better guitar - the finish is 99.5% flawless which impressed me. But it was the *feel* of it in my hands that clinched the deal - I can't stand to put it down! It plays so sweetly, the factory setup was excellent. The downsides are few: The input jack wanted to fall apart right away, so I pulled it out, tightened the INNER nut all the way, then I put a tiny drop of glue on the washer for the outside nut. It's been over a week and it is still tight. The lack of metal screw inserts for the back covers is a downer - the wood strips too easily. I plan to have metal inserts installed.
I have no issues with the stock pickups. Since I am new at this, I don't have any biases about other pickups. The Classic played thru the little Marshall sounds like a dream - creamy vocal lead tones are easy to find, wicked distortion is no problem, and the clean tones are better than I expected. The Epi LP and the Marshall MG are a great match. I just play and play and play on it. My "bass callouses" were not very tough because bass strings don't "cut" like guitar strings. But it only took a few days for my "guitar callouses" to come back tough as ever.
So there's my long-winded story. I hope to learn more about this gee-tar stuff around here.
