Greetings from Singapore, I am 47, and last week bought my EPI Custom Plus in honey sunburst and got myself a Spider II 30 watter as well. Sad thing is i can only play the chords on this beauty. Any suggestions how i should get really started on playing the electric guitar Any help will be much appreciated.

Welcome aboard Sparky and congrats to your purchase! So you bought your first electric guitar just recently and already discovered us guys here on the internet... Well if you ask me, the best first step on an electric guitar is taking some "lessons" from a pal that plays electric guitar. Maybe some books or video lessons could help as well, but I am german, so I cannot recommend a specific one. Maybe the other fellows here can help you out. Anyway, feel welcome and don´t be shy to ask questions in all our different boards.

After you get some basic technique, start learning some (easy) songs you like, that'll keep your motivation up Welcome, and congrats on that guitar

Welcome to the joys of guitar playing and the possible / probable life-long persuit of the the gear you need to get..... in order to create the tone you are trying to find ;D (this was meant as a joke ...but it can become a reality !!)
This is a great forum and you can learn a lot from the replies.
I would add, to the previous excellent suggestions, that you have a friend show you the notes of the pentatonic scale. The concept might sound boring and difficult ( it isn't ) and you will have a lot of fun with this scale. It really made playing much more enjoyable and "creative" for me. You can keep this idea in mind for later if you need more time to get comfortable with the other things you are trying to learn.
Enjoy the process. You will likely learn something if you start playing guitar with friends that play (as mentioned previously). Don't get worried by the level of skill that they have in comparison to yours. Everybody had to learn !!
Congratulations

PRACTICE, youve got to be determined to get this thing.its not something you put down and forget about, you think about it all of the time. theres always something more i want from the guitar. im always humming something or fiddling w/ something new as far as songwriting goes. so yeah, PRACTICE. dont give up. ever.

Hi guys, Firstly a very big 'thank you' to all the replies and encouragement. Yes i found you guys by chance while checking the Epiphone website for the les paul i have been wanting to have for a while now. Being a beginner, i was not sure what i wanted - a budget beginner package or go for something that i really like and will last me for a very very long time. Well after much thought and 'survey' , i decided to go for something i really like and that has to be the les paul custom plus with all the bindings and the head stock was really what did me in, considering the price. Yes i have signed up for lessons with a music school on a 1 to 1 basis which will start in March and they will guage me then plan the lessons for me. Meanwhile, i've been trying to pick up as much as i can from some of the guitar sites. ( any sites to suggest ? ) Thanks alot guys and it a good feeling to feel so welcomed here . . . .

Welcome to the forum Sparky! You sure located us quickly. I`m sure you`ll enjoy it here. Nice choice on the guitar, by the way. There are numerous websites dedicated to guitarists out there. www.guitarists.net comes to mind. There are some lessons available for free, along with tons of information for you. You can also find links to other sites while you`re there. www.cyberfret.com is another good one for you. I`m certain the other members will provide you with some more websites to check out. What type of music are you primarily interested in playing? Google it, and see what turns up. Above all, have fun. Don`t be afraid to ask for assistance or advice around here, no matter how trivial it may seem to you. The membership is dedicated to helping all other members

Hi guys, Juz to update you people, I have got myself a teacher and had my 1st lesson last Monday. Well the 1st lesson was sort of a getting to know each other, him showing me what he can do with the guitar ;D and me showing him what i can't do with it. Must say that it was a real eye opener watching him play close up. Anyway it's still too soon to form a conclusion/opinion about what i can learn from him. Thought I'll see him for a month, ( once a week and 1 hour each time ) then decide if it's any good. BTW i have got myself a DVD [glow=red,2,300]Fender - Getting Started On Electric Guitar with Keith Wyatt[/glow] and realise there's lots more I can't do. Anyway I am going to give it a real shot both with the lessons and the DVD and see how it goes over the next month. Will keep you guys especially [glow=red,2,300]Jeje[/glow]posted on my development. Cheers
