...Dan............ ...I have a Vox AD60VT......one of the original Valvetronix models...it's my one and only...first amp...I don't have any experience with other amps to compare it with....... ...my opinion of these types of amps...Line 6...Fender CyberTwin...etc...is that their jacks of all trades and masters of none...in other words...you could probably spend a lot of money on individual amps...pedals...etc...and get the real deal on a particular sound...problem as I see it for most experienced players...they've already got a lot of equipment laying around so why should they buy the sound again...if you don't...or...you want to consolidate everything into one package...a modeling amp should suffice.............. ...I personally have had a lot of fun with it learning my music lessons...I can dial in and come fairly close to a piece that I'm trying to learn...my teacher helps me get the particular setting..."you got the entire pedal display in your amp"...also...I can by-pass the effects and just play it like a regular amp............. ...I've had others with more experience than I play through it...they do a better job at playing and using the effects and they're prety impressed............... ...I'd recommend a site for Valvetronix users or persons considering a purchase......... patchtronix.com/...if there are any problems with a particular model...they should show up there...

I have played around quite a bit with those. I don't own one though. I think that they have a pretty good tube feel for a hybrid amp. And there is almost no end to the possibilities (And it's cheap). I got so interested in this amp, that I probably would have bought it if I weren't saving for a marshall tsl100. And besides, it's pretty cool to stand on stage with the letters VOX on your amp

...besides the modeling.........
...the thing that sold me were the other features that came on the amp...external speaker outputs....headphone jack...variable amp power switch (in my case: 60w..30w..15w..1w)...effects in/out (why?)...foot controller ready...the other amp that I was looking at was a Blues Jr...basic tube...no bells...no whistles.............
...when I got it...had to try the different effects...one does a pretty good imitation for Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner...at 60 watts...it's the only time my daughter's ever stormed into the basement................. ............DAD...TURN IT DOWN !!!!!!!!!!!.........................
...since then it's usually parked on 15 watts..............

Hehe, the power switch is a pretty sweet thing. Which grill cloth do you have on yours? they come in three options.

...didn't know the grill cloths came in three different options...are you sure those were available with the original Valetronix models....didn't have a choice....they weren't selling too well....my local dealer doesn't keep stuff around that doesn't move....around Christmas '02 he put these on sale at cost ($460) to get rid of them...and he did........fast........it was a no-brainer between that and the Blues Jr................
...the grill cloth is a very dark blue...with a tri-color thread stripe...green/yellow/maroon...for the diamond pattern.......................
...for anyone living in an apartment...dorm....the power switch would definitely be a feature worth having....I wouldn't say it saved my marriage...but...nobody wants to hear me when I start learning a new lesson..............

Youre right, it's the 50 watt and down that have optional grill cloths. But it's the one you have that is the coolest I think, it looks more original than the more common silver grill. You got a really nice deal on yours it seems, congrats!

HColl...great posts, very useful info and even though I'm currently not in the market, I found it useful. I agree, the Valvetronix line is tempting and are getting lots of favorable reviews.
I spent 30-40 minutes playing through a Roland Cube30 at a local dealer and was very impressed. Perhaps the thing that shocked me the most was how loud that little Cube30 can get. I thought the different amp models all sounded quite good with my favorite being the stack model. The Mesa Rectifier model was also pretty cool but a bit over the top for my playing taste. I don't know if the Roland had that power varying switch that HColl's Vox has, that is an excellent feature! Maybe the Cube60 does but I doubt if the Cube30 did. The "JC Clean" sound on the Cube30 was actually quite nice....bell clear but a bit fatter than the classic Fender clean tone. I was pretty impressed with the Cube30 and the different models, the effects weren't great, useable but not great. Another one to check might be the Randall RX30D or RX30R. Not quite as versatile as the Vox but then again, a heckuva lot less expensive too. Different base/clean sound too as the Randall sound, from my very limited experience, seems as unique to Randall as the Fender sound is to Fender.

My school has a cube 30. If some of the students wouldn't have blown the speaker it would still sound good! I like it, but not as much as the valvetronix. On the valvetronix you can have more than one eq setting, which you can't on the cube.

I like it very much. Great amp. I bought the 15-watt version for my son and it blew me away.
I looked at the 30, but the store model seem to be not working right. It went from clean to distortion, and nothing in-between. The 15 and the 50 worked perfectly.
