Just wondering if it makes any real difference, or as much a difference, to change speakers on a modern style modeling amp. Think Line6, Vox Valvetronix, Cube30/60?
Aren't the amp models built into these style amps supposed to give the sound of the desired amp...speaker and all?

Good question. I've never tried that. But if you decide to try different speakers I highly recommend Scumbacks. Check them out in the speaker section here: www.scumbagamps.com/index.html

Indeed a good question... I guess it won´t ruin the sound of such a modelling combo amp, but maybe the amp models are soundwise matched to suit the stock speakers. On the other hand... there are also modelling amp heads that can power each cabinet that is available...

I changed the stock speaker in my Line 6 Spider II because I read a lot of posts on the Line 6 site from others saying this or that speaker sounds better. Well I took out the stock Celestion speaker and put in a better Celestion that was recommended on the forum. You know what, I could hardly tell any difference. Maybe a little but not enough to justify the $99.00 it cost for the new one. I am seriously considering trying the stock one again and maybe doing something with the new one, like building a speaker cab or something.

Or try to sell the new one as "almost new and hardly used" for 84.99 $. Yes, often we have too high expectations concerning upgrades we make. The result is in most cases "slightly better", but is it worth the money? There are two answers... yes and no! It really depends! Steele.

Thanks for the responses. I don't currently have a "modeling" amp but won't rule out buying one in the future. I'm thoroughly enjoying the Fender BJr but I've come to the realization that it could be more cost effective to just buy something like a Cube 30 rather than 3-4 stomp boxes. Plus having a second amp will be a necessity if my kids stick with it.
EXCAPTAIN.....I sort of suspected what you experienced would be the case. Like Steelpriest stated, manufacturers must take into consideration the speaker selection and tweak their sounds accordingly. I don't doubt that "improvements" can be made just that doing so may be more trial and error and not as dramatic a difference.

I should know better after doing this many, many times. I always say that I will not mess with something but then I have a moment of weakness and BOOM! I do it, then most of the time I regret it. I will never learn. But I guess there is no fun in playing it safe all the time!!

I think most of us can say pretty much the same about ourselves when it comes to any number of different things.

UPDATE............
I changed back to the stock Celestion speaker that was in my Line 6 amp. The one I had put in was a Celestion G12T-75 speaker, which is a great speaker. But I put the other back and had a listen. I found that the sound had changed. I really can't say if it is better or worse, just different. I had to back down the bass settings on the patches I stored a little. I also noticed the high freqs were not as "scratchy" as before. This leads me to believe that maybe the stock speaker is better voiced for this amp. Maybe these digital amps can't reproduce sound like a solid state or tube amp so the stock speakers might be the best bet for them. I hope this helps anyone contemplating changing the speakers in their modeling amp. Take care all!!!
