I wrote Ted Weber (of Weber Speakers) as some suggested and he recommended a 25 watt Weber 12F150 for a warmer, big bottom tone with lots of punch and dynamics and a warm, smooth high end.
I guess that's what I'll go with.

What does the (wa) stand for and what is the difference between the (wa) and the other 12ax7 tubes? So I asked GT customer service and here is what I got. What does th WA,WC and R stand for at the of the 12AX7? I have heard rumors that it stands for where the tube was made. Is this true? And if it is could you tell me where the WA,WC and R tubes are made, I read that the C tubes are made in China on your web site. {Reply} The WA, WC and R are all made in the Reflector plant in Russia. The GT 12AX7R is the current 12AX7WC. It was the 12AX7WA which has been discontinued. The 12AX7C is China (Shuguang) not to be confused with Sino in China. There are a lot of details on these tubes and more on my GAB website in the downloadable tube primers. Regards, Myles S. Fair Warning to everyone when replacing Tubes. The Chinese made tubes are the ones to stay away from. Russian made tubes are usually the best made.

Once again, late to the party, but.....in the interest of affecting a tonal change isn't swapping one brand or revision 12AX7 for another just a more elaborate way of fiddling with the master and regular volume control? I mean, if you want breakup at lower volume just dial up the first volume control and down on the master (or visa versa for later breakup).
I can see how a speaker swap would make a dramatic difference in tonal range but I just don't see the tube swap for those reasons.
