...I'm looking for an extension cabinet for my Vox Valvetronix AD 60 VT....
...I want something SMALL to spread the sound around...according to the spec's...it has to be 8 ohms and handle a minimum of 60 watts....
...Carvin's Vintage Twead 1x12 looks about right....
...Kustom makes a 1x12 that's fairly inexpensive (this is what I'm leaning towards)....
...is it possible to use another amp as an extension speaker...I was thinking of getting a small acoustic amp...it could also serve as a backup amp....
...anybody have a recommendation....

...is it possible to use another amp as an extension speaker...I was thinking of getting a small acoustic amp...it could also serve as a backup amp... What? I hope you don´t plan to connect an additional amp´s input to your amps speaker output? Yikes! Well if the speaker of your second amp has 8 ohms and is able to handle the power you may disconnect it from that amp, install a cable and a jack and use the amp enclosure with the speaker as a cabinet. But I recommend to keep your hands off such handicrafts... Better buy an additional speaker cabinet, I recommend a Marshall MR 1936 or is it 1932 2x12" cabinet, 8 ohms 140 or 150 watts power handling with Celestion speakers, this cabinet is also able to handle the power of a 50 watts tube head. Such a cabinet is really an investment in the future, you can keep it in any case if you might buy a bigger amp. A 2x12" cabinet provides more tone than a 1x12" one, there are lots of cabinets on Ebay, just have a look... also Laney has nice 2x12" cabinets, not to forget Line6 and what about VOX?

...if I were to get a 2x12...it would be the Vox....
...I like small...1x12...possibly even a 1x10....
...the extra amp was just an idea...admittedly...a bad one....

Well, lets see... I think you'll be pleasently surprised what a 1x10 will add to your rig. it will give you TONS of presense, and extra kick in the high end. I would never want an amp with just a single 10 inch speaker, it sounds thin, and a little lifeless, but in addition to a 12" speaker, it can tdo wonders. Now, are you a gigging musician? if you gig I'd reccomend the 2x12 addition, it will give you more head room, and fill an area. bu7t if you just practice in your room or have a band you just jam with every once and a while, the 10" will add a whole new flavor to your set up... Agian, this is only MY opinion, take it or leave it! Aaron

...hey twsk8r....
...thanks for your comments....
...no...I'm not a gigging musician...unless you count church on Sundays with an acoustic...gigging only counts if you get paid...right...maybe some day...at which time I'll reconsider a larger amp/and/or/cabinet....
...this is just for playing/practicing around the house...actually...it's a form of G.A.S....an excuse for plugging into that 1/4" jack in the back of the amp....
...for this purpose...I'm thinking something inexpensive like a Kustom 1x10 or 1x12 pa/extension speaker would suffice...I'm leaning towards the 1x10 just because I've already got the 12" in my amp...looks like the spec's are about right...like you said...additional flavoring....
...what I'd like to hear from you or anybody are reasons why I wouldn't want to do this....

Sounds like a good idea. If you want the 1x10 then go for it. If you wouldn't use the extra power then a 2x12 would be a bit of overkill in addition to your amp.

If you wanted, I could give you a sound sample of me using just my 12 inch, and then stomping in the 10 inch to show you the sound difference... All i would need is some info on how I would get this to you, and I'd need my mic back from the ex- band... Aaron

...zep...yeh...a 2x12 is way too much...size/weight/power....I'm not really into loud...for now...I'd rather spread low volumes around usind an extra cabinet....
...twsk8r...the sound sample sounds like a lot of bother...what I'm more interested in...is that YOU use a 1x10 and a 1x12 combination...interesting....
...so I am on the right track....
...the Kustom's also come in two different shapes...one's a standard rectangular box...the other is shaped so it can sit angled up (floor monitor)....stand it on end like a regular cab...comes with a hole for stand mounting (pa)....
...the only problem I see with the second is it might be a problem to carry because of its shape....
...the Kustom's have a horn speaker in addition to the 10" or the 12"...is that any concern....

So your considering a PA speaker cabinet??? Hmmm, that may be a concern in itself...it'd be like running a guitar through a stereo, the speakers have to "voiced" for guitar to give it the tone you want... A consideration you may want to make, is either buying that cabinet, and just swappign the speaker, or give your self a fun littel project and build your self an extension cab... Thas my 2 cents! ...hey twsk86....
...your two cents makes a lot of sense...thank you....
...that probably explains why you see a lot of pa speakers on ebay....
...that Carvin 1x12 twead is lookin' better....

A cabinet with an additional horn will sound terrible with an guitar amp, be sure you will get the harshest sound you ever heard... a guitar amp requires a guitar cabinet with speakers designed for guitars. The Kustom cabinet you mention is either a P.A. monitor box or a bass cabinet. Bass guitar cabinets sometimes use horns. Building a cabinet "can" be fun, if you know what you´re doing... if you wanna build one that looks decent you won´t save money, more likely you will even spend more than if you buy a 2nd hand hand one.

...I certainly know my limitations....
...I'm not the world's greatest carpentar...and...I don't have a lot of time on my hands...but it would be interesting....

The thing is Steelpreist, it is VERY hard to find a 1x10 cab...2x10 are hard enough, but you wouldn't want that, it would over power the sound of hte 12... Hmmm...I think building one is your only option unless you get lucky and find one used...you could always buy a Kustom amp with a 10(they all come with celestions, which are what i prefer), and re-wire it so it can be used as an amp, liek it is suppose to, for backup and something smaller to haul around, and also addan input so it can be used as a cabinet...it might work, what do you thing steele? Of course it is possible to modify it that way. Cut the speaker cable, built in a connector jack und plug, so you can still use it as a combo if you wanna, but you can also use the amp enclosure with the amp "off" only as a cabinet. Voilá! ;D I posted this before, it is possible... indeed, but make sure you do a good job on it and don´t make it sloppy and cheap looking.

...maybe a busted amp that still has a good speaker...take the amp out...re-wire the speaker to a jack....
...a 10" would overpower a 12"...looks like it's gonna be a 12"...that's okay...I'll end up with a 2x12 sound....
...any problems....
