My Epi LP has been in it's case for about a year waiting for me to finish up the modification I started on her. I had decided last year that I had enough humbucker guitars and needed a P-90 or two. So I called up my favorite pickup maker and ordered a set of Bill Lawrence P-90's, these are humbucker sized so putting them into an LP would be no problem. After they arrived I mounted them in the guitar, ran the wiring and then put her away. She has been in her case ever since.
I pulled her out of the case today and finished up her wiring, strung her up, tuned her up, turned on the amp and...........
Oh no, no volume control!!!!!! Well it did not take me but a minute to figure out that I had not switch over 2 wires. On all Epi and Gibson guitars from the factory when the pickup selector is in the middle position you can not seperately adjust the volume on each pickup, there is 3 wires per pickup to change to get them working completely seperate, I had changed 2 on each, but neglected to do the 3rd. What I ended up with was 4 tone controls and no volume control. Back into the shop, snip, solder, snip, solder and she was done. Everything works perfectly now.
She sounds sweet with these P-90's in her. Tomorrow I'll do a complete setup on her.
Now I gotta get the Tele done.

Hey Chet...sounds like a nice LP. How are the P 90s..more bite or what? What were you looking for when you decided on that change and did you get what you wanted?

Hey Chet...sounds like a nice LP. How are the P 90s..more bite or what? What were you looking for when you decided on that change and did you get what you wanted? Too early to tell, I need to spend a few days playing her. The first impression is that I think this guitar will move into the chosen few that stay out to be played more. I was looking for a slightly different tone and had heard P-90's were the way to go. I chose Bill Lawrence ( www.billlawrence.com ) because I have used his pickups before and really like them, they are versatile and sound great to me. Besides Bill and his wife Becky are 2 of the nicest people I have ever met. I'll give a full report on this guitar after I have spent some time with her.

Hey hey CA I was wondering where your LP Special was made. Smooth informed me that mine was made at the Sae Jung Korea factory because the s# starts with SJ*******. And as far as the P90s go, let me know how you like them. I have been thinking of putting P90s in my Gibson S1 since they are closer to the original discontinued pups that it came with. There were humbucker 57s in it when I got it. Then I put some open coil no name humbuckers out of a cheap guitar that I didn't want anymore. They were ok but are needing to be changed. I am either going to go with the P90s or back to the 57s.

Do you like it? And what mods have you made to it? Mods: Grover 18:1 Rotomatics, TonePros Locking Bridge/Stopbar set, Bill Lawrence L-500XL/L-500R pups, Concentric pots to give me 2 volume and 2 tone controls, and Schaller Straplocks. When I got done with it, it played and sounded better than my then stock Epi LP Standard.

Way to go man. I am for shure going to put some Grover minis on mine. The stock tuners were ok at first but are already causing me a headache. Did you have to bore out the holes to put the Grovers on? If so did you do it or have it done? I may also have a bone nut put on, and have the frets dressed.I have no problems with the rest of the guitar, ,,,,,,,,,so far that is.

I used a dremmel to bore the holes out from 8mm to 10mm for the Grovers. This is very tricky and you need to really take your time and do it real slow if you do it yourself.

After a few days with the P-90's in the Epi LP I will say this:
P-90's are Single Coils on steroids, nice big fat tone. I was able to get some decent quack attack out of these things. Adjust the tone control a little and you get a rich, full, sweet tone. You know the spot you have been looking for with your HB's or your Single Coils? That spot is probably in a set of P-90's. I may experiment with changing the values of the caps to see what else I can do with these P-90's.
I would have to say that putting Bill Lawrence P-90's in the Epi LP Standard was an excellent choice.
