I finally got around to taking off all the stickers that came on my LP, but most of them didnt come off that well and still left that sticky part on. Does anyone know how to get this off easily? I've tried rubbing it off using small amounts of water rubbed on a cotton t-shirt, but most of it is still there.

Years ago my girlfriend gave me some cosmetic stuff to try on that gunk and it really works great though it smells real strong at first (not dangerously). I just called her to see if she remembered what it was, and we think it's called Skin So Soft Bath Oil, from Avon; I still have some in an unlabeled little bottle so I'm not sure how to spell it. Though it evaporates really quickly it's kind of greasy, so I try to not get it near anything else other than the residue gunk. I put it on with a Q-tip so as to not use too much (or get it on my fingers), and so I can rub with it gently. Then I make sure it's all gone by going over the area again with a dry Q-tip. Bath oil is a lot more gentle than acetone (the main ingredient in nail polish remover) or strong chemicals.

If I remember correctly, lighter fluid or nail polish remover work well, HOWEVER you must use them sparingly as they will remove the finish from your guitar also.

For all of you artists out there-"Bestine" (rubber cement thinner) or lighter fluid works the best, IMHO. Please wash both your guitar and hands afterwards though-the stuff is TOXIC!!!

I´d stay away from lighter fluids... don´t know... What I do is the following, I remove the stickers and what is left then on the guitar needs some time to become a bit more harder and not so soft and sticky, after a week or or half a month you can rub it away with your fingernail and take the rest of it away with guitar polish. In my opinion better stay away from flammable liquids, they may be to sharp and ruin the finish. Just my personal opinion, I never dared to try lighter fluid.

Like I said earlier, bath oil is gentle. I've seen guys at golf shops use lighter fluid to remove 2-sided tape from steel shafts, so I know it'll work -- but I wouldn't trust it not to damage wood or paint.

'Doh!!!
And I have always used the nail polish remover trick. HAs always worked great for me, but I use just a bit on a cotton ball and work lightly so as not to damage the finish. Of course, these decals are on the back on the headstock so it's not as if anyone will see it....but.....
Goo Gone.....good stuff there boss. Next time I'll try that. My newest guitar, and Ibanez, didn't have any decals on the back. Of course, it's a natural finish (no gloss, very similar to the Goth finish but more of a stair....you can still see and feel, to a degree, the grain) so decals would have been a very bad idea.

VMP Naptha is what we use at the plant to remove adhesive on guitar finishes and hardware. Causes no harm and some people fill their zippos with the stuff. We even go as far as using acetone on stubborn stuff, the poly used on Epi guitars is quite durable.

Smooth, what do you recommend for getting residue off the chromed pickup covers? I never dared try anything on those....

sort of depends on the type of residue. Naptha will do it in most cases, if not try acetone. Waxing the covers (car wax that is) removes some types of funk. Do NOT use wax on the gold hardware unless you'd like it to change to chrome real fast. Nickel hardware is easier to clean but it also oxidizes at the drop of a hat. Nickel pup covers can be buffed quite aggresively and you can even get out many small scratches that way as well.

I never did try to take off the gunk from my Standard's covers (look chrome -- I guess they're nickel). Where is this Naptha found?

VMP used to be available from most hardware stores, but i hear they are getting few and far between. Stew mac has it but i think you can look locally for it.
