You know, Wierdsley, if you remove the pickguard from a Standard MIM Tele there is an area carved out of the body under the neck pickup that's large enough to accommodate a humbucker (and designed just for that purpose) -- .... Hey Ol Geezer Hi! Do you know if that goes for the MIM Strats as well??? Bought one for my daughter. It has the 3 single coils and she already wants a bigger humbucker sound...KIDS?!?

My own opinion would be to put a HB in the bridge and a SC in the neck positions.
Either way or both would work as the MIM Tele's are routed for it.

Pretty sure the Strats are routed only to hold the singles(my USA is ,anyway), but if you go get a new single coil with reverse coil winding, and opposite polarity magnets, positions 2 and 4 will provide humbucker operation.

I was going for the easier mod, since you don't have to do much beyond swapping pickups and pickguards, and you can do it with only loosening the strings and not having to take off a lot of other hardware. Also, it's my favorite Tele configuration -- I like the sound with both pickups on together.

Well, Mandough says no, so I guess not. I don't recall seeing otherwise (it sure caught my attention opening up the Tele). My tech buddy (who does my mods since I don't have the dexterity anymore) wired a toggle switch on my Standard Strat that turns on and off the neck pickup regardless of where the 5-position blade switch is set. Similar to the Super Strat switching, I can now get all possible pickup combinations, including neck+bridge and all three on together. Definitely a bigger sound, but possibly not what your daughter is looking for.

I changed my MIM pups over to Bill Lawrence pups and went with a single coil sized humbucker in the bridge position and single coils in neck and middle positions. When I rewired it I put 2 push/pull pots in, one of them coil splits the humbucker and the other activates the bridge pup anytime. I also wired the tone controls so that neck and middle are on one and bridge is on one by itself. I think I counted it up once and came up with 11 different pup combinations.

I looked on Ebay for a Mexi Strat body, and they ARE routed big in the bridge , but not the neck or middle. Sorry for the inconsistency, there.

As it turns out, adding the switch the way we did also accidentally affected the tone controls, so that they're engaged differently when the switch is on -- I couldn't tell you how they are, I just play it....

Hey Guys...thanks for all of the info...you've all given me lots to consider before I make any decision. Still leaning towards the Tele, something about the vibe of that guitar appeals to me.

Thanks Ol Geezer that might be a bit much tho..as she is still learning....Not really sure if she knows what she wants yet..We'll just wait a while i think

I just got the new Carvin catalog and their pickups caught my attention -- they have a twinblade humbucker TBH60 model that fits in a Strat opening that could be the answer for your daughter. Typical humbuckers for Strats I've seen just have one coil on top of the other to cancel hum but not affect sound -- these are side by side, and with four wires can be configured split coil, series, and parallel. They even have a .PDF file on their website to explain wiring.

On that same note, Seymore Duncan offers the "Lil' '59" it's a single coil size side by side humbucker like the Carvin. Yer choices just doubled ! !
