Hmmm, I often see lots of Les Pauls without a pickguard. I want to know why some of us take them off? Only for cosmetical reasons or is there another reason? Do you like your Les Pauls better with or without pickguard?

Do you like your Les Pauls better with or without pickguard? Some 'Pauls with more interesting finishes come from the factory without pickguards -- I suppose to show off the color and/or pattern beneath. I left the pickguard on my '56GoldTop because it just seemed right out of tradition, as well as one on a Limited Edition that might be worth more if it remained "stock." But they got in my way on my DOT and Casino, so I took 'em off. I think those look better that way, too. The only pickguards I'd leave on absolutely come on the Rickenbackers, 'cause theirs are great looking as well as part of the overall design, plus the strings are way above the bodies.

The only arch top I have owned was a No Nname LP copy of the Black Beauty. I ended up taking the guard off to clean the thing one day. Well I thought it looked better without it, so I left it off. I got used to it for the next few years I guess. Because now it feels wierd when I play any arch top with a pick guard on it.

I would have to agree with both Ol Geezer and ZacAttack. However, It ultimately becomes a personal choice.

I've been thinking of taking mine off my LP due to my pick attack. I constantly tap and beat on it. Makes alot of noise. The doublecuts without a pickgaurd are starting to look good now.

I say, if it comes with one stock, leave it and if it never had one, then so be it.
My LP on the gallery here, came with one, would it look better without it, probably, but I am not willing to see the leftover holes.
My Ace did not come with a guard. I liek the look better, just my 2cents.

Agreed,.....
Personal choice, and playing style.
A nicely finished LP played hard, might require a pick-guard, (to protect its finish)
But ultimately, its up to the owner.
IMHO

I keep the pickguard on, on my LP standard plus. It looks so nice because it matches the binding on the neck and body, and I play pretty hard and fast sometimes. I can see all the scratches on my pickguard, and be thankful that they're not on the body! Besides, scratches are temporary on a pickguard until you buy a new one, scratches on the body stay there

Couldn't have said it better myself. I also agree its a total personal choice. On my '56 however, the pickguard remains.

I've got mine on, think it looks sorta weird without it.. Plus my fingers always rest on it when I'm playing(old habit).. I'm always checking though, to see if "maybe now it would look good without it", hope I don't wear those screwholes down :/

I personally think that to have the classic LP look You need the classic LP Pick guard. Although it is obviously personal choice..... My veiw is derived from someone whose never even seen their LP without the pickgaurd, so....... james
